The English language we know today is about six hundred years old. For half that time, English was
just language of the people living in England. The modem English language grew from about the year
1400. Now English is the most widely spoken language in the world. It is one of the working languages at
International meetings, business, science and in other fields.
The differences between American English and British English are not very great. Written English is
more or less the same in both Britain and America, though there are some spelling differences. For
example, centre, licence, colour and travelled are spelt center, license, color and traveled in American
English. In America, "cock, rubber, ill, holiday, lorry and post" are called "rooster, eraser, sick, vacation,
truck, mail". But people from the two countries can still understand each other easily.
There are only a very small number of differences in grammar between American English and British
English. Some words may have two kinds of pronunciation. You may wonder "Which is correct?" The
answer is that it doesn't matter. But you should speak either American English or British English. Don't try
to speak both at the same time!
1. When did the modem English language begin to grow?
    ______________________________________________________________
2. Is English the only working language at International meetings?

3. What is the word "color" spelt in British English?

Have you ever seen people building houses? To build a house, you need workers. They use their
hands, tools (工具) and machines to put things together. Building the ISS (國(guó)際太空站) is the same.
The difference is that the workers are astronauts. They walk in space and use robots' arms and hands to
do their work.
In the space station, astronauts are comfortable. The temperature there is about 21℃. But outside the
station, it can be too hot or cold for people. In the sunlight, it's about 120℃. In the shadow (陰暗處) of
the station, it's about -85℃. So when astronauts walk in space, they have to wear heavy clothes —
spacesuits.
Spacesuits also keep astronauts safe from flying rubbish (垃圾) in space. Each time people go into
space, they leave rubbish there. So astronauts should be careful because there's a lot of rubbish, some
rubbish goes many times as fast as a plane!
Space walking is not easy, and it can be dangerous. So getting ready for it takes a lot of time to learn.
Astronauts will need to do 160 space walks to finish their work in the ISS. That will take about 1,900
man-hour of work.
1. What's the temperature in the space station?
A. 21℃
B. 120℃
C. -85℃
D. -21℃

2. The astronauts work in space with _____.
A. scientists' hands
B. tools in their hands

3. Which of following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Space walking is very comfortable
B. Space walking is difficult
C. Astronauts needn't wear spacesuits when walking in space
D. Space walking is very safe

4. What does the underlined word "spacesuit" mean in Chinese?
A. 太空服

Do you know why different animals or pests (昆蟲(chóng)) have their special colors? Colors in them seem to be
used mainly to protect themselves.
Some birds like eating locusts (蝗蟲(chóng)), but birds cannot easily catch them. Why? It is because locusts
change their colors together with the change of the colors of crops (莊稼). When crops are green, locusts look
green. But as the harvest time comes, locusts change to the same brown color as crops have. Some other pests
with different colors from plants are easily found and eaten by others. So they have to hide themselves for lives
and appear only at night.
If you study the animal life, you'll find the main use of coloring is to protect themselves. Bears, lions and
other animals move quietly through forests. They cannot be easily seen by hunters (獵人). This is because they
have the colors much like the trees. Have you ever noticed an even stranger act? A kind of fish in the sea can
send out a kind of very black liquid (液體) when it faces danger. While the liquid spreads over (散開(kāi)), its
enemies (敵人) cannot find it. And it immediately swims away. So it has lived up to now though it is not strong
at all.
