Dear Xiao Hui,

How is it going? And how about your sister Xiao Xue this term? I’m happy to write to you. Do you know that there are two special days for parents in America? One is Mother’s Day in May, and the other is Father’s Day in June. On these two days, American children often give gifts to their parents or take them out for dinner. Common gifts are flowers and cards for mothers and shirts or ties for fathers. I hear that it is becoming more and more popular to celebrate Mother’s Day and Father’s Day in China. I want to know if children in China also give similar gifts to their parents. I believe that there are many ways to show our love. Actually, we don’t have to spend a lot of money. It is also a good idea to help parents do something instead.

Yours,

Amy

【題目】 In the fall of 1985, I was a bright-eyed girl heading off to Howard University, aiming at a legal career and dreaming of sitting on a Supreme Court bench somewhere. Twenty-one years later I am still a bright-eyed dreamer and one with quite a different tale to tell.

My grandma, an amazing woman, graduated from college at the age of 65. She was the first in our family to reach that goal. But one year after I started college, she developed cancer. I made the choice to withdraw from college to care for her. It meant that school and my personal dream would have to wait.

Then I got married with another dream: building my family with a combination of adopted and biological children. In 1999, we adopted our first son. To lay eyes on him was fantastic and very emotional. A year later came our second adopted boy. Then followed son No. 3. In 2003, I gave birth to another boy.

You can imagine how fully occupied I became, raising four boys under the age of 8! Our home was a complete zoo— a joyous zoo. Not surprising. I never did make it back to college full-time. But I never gave up on the dream either. I had only one choice: to find a way. That meant taking as few as one class each semester.

The hardest part was feeling guilty about the time I spent away from the boys. They often wanted me to stay home with them. There certainly were times I wanted to quit, but I knew I should set an example for them to follow through the rest of their lives.

In 2007, I graduated from the University of North Carolina. It took me over 21 years to get my college degree! I am not special, just single-minded. It always struck me that when you’re looking at a big challenge from the outside it looks huge, but when you’re in the midst of it, it just seems normal. Everything you want won’t arrive in your life on one day. It’s a process. Remember little steps add up to big dreams.

1When the author went to Howard University, her dream was to be ________.

A. a writerB. a teacherC. a judgeD. a doctor

2The underlined expression “withdraw from college” in Paragraph 2 means “________”.

A. quit collegeB. graduate from college

C. start collegeD. leave for college

3Why did the author withdraw from school in her second year of college?

A. She wanted to study by herself.

B. She fell in love and got married.

C. She suffered from a serious illness

D. She decided to look after her grandma.

4What does the author mostly want to tell us in the last paragraph?

A. Failure is the mother of success.B. Little by little, one goes far.

C. Every coin has two sides.D. Well begun, half done.

5Which of the following can best describe the author?

A. Caring and determined.B. Honest and responsible.

C. Ambitious and sensitive.D. Innocent and single-minded.

【題目】 The UK should start producing lab-grown meat to help solve the world’s food crisis (危機(jī)), according to a research group. A report by the Adam Smith Institute says meat made in a laboratory is better for the environment and would be cheaper than meat produced from farm animals.

Need for meat around the world is expected to increase by 70% by the year 2050. So could people be eating lab-grown meat in the future? Usually animals like cows are killed to produce the meat that people eat, but scientists have found a way to make meat in a laboratory without killing any animals.

Animals are made up of cells (細(xì)胞). Scientists worked out how to take cells from an animal, like a cow, and multiply (繁殖) them in a dish. In the end from one tiny cell, tens of billions of cells can be grown. These join together to form meat.

In 2013, the first hamburger grown this way was eaten in London. It took a year to produce and cost over 200,000 to make. Dr Mark Post, who created the world’s first hamburger from meat grown in a lab, told the BBC it “tastes exactly the same as the meat we know”. When two food critics (評(píng)論家) tried the burger in 2013, one said it was “close to meat” and another said it tasted like a real hamburger. It’s not just beef that is being created; companies are also working on other meat like turkey and chicken.

The Adam Smith Institute says moving away from the present way meat is produced would help reduce greenhouse emissions (排放) by up to 96% and free up 99% of the land used in farming worldwide. They also think it will reduce chances of food poisoning (中毒) because the meat is grown under such controlled conditions. Jamie Hollywood from the Adam Smith Institute also told the BBC lab-grown meat could be a lot cheaper. He says the price has gone down in five years from 200,000 to 8, so in the future it could be even less.

1The main idea of Paragraph 3 is ______.

A.what lab-grown meat isB.how lab-grown meat is made

C.what lab-grown meat tastes likeD.when people can eat lab-grown meat

2The writer mentions two food critics in Paragraph 4 to show that ______.

A.lab-grown meat is cheaper

B.chicken meat can be made in the lab

C.lab-grown meat tastes similar to animal meat

D.English people first tasted lab-grown meat

3The writer probably agrees that ______.

A.lab-grown meat will cause a lot of problems

B.lab-grown meat tastes better than animal meat

C.making lab-grown meat will cost too much money

D.lab-grown meat can help solve the world’s food crisis

4Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?

A.Could lab-grown meat be the future of food?

B.What does lab-grown meat taste like?

C.When could people eat lab-grown meat?

D.What is lab-grown meat and how is it made?

Passage 2 The Wonderful Wizard of Oz

It is an interesting story about a girl named Dorothy, who is taken away from her home in a storm and finds herself in the Land of Oz. Dorothy, together with her companions the Tin Woodman who wants a heart, the Scarecrow who wants a brain and the Cowardly Lion who wants courage, journeys in search of the wizard, in order to return home. After facing many difficulties they successfully meet the Great Oz, who in fact is not a wizard. However, the old man gives the Scarecrow a brain made of pins and needles, the Tin Woodman a heart made of silk and filled with sawdust, and the Cowardly Lion a bottle of courage. In the end, Dorothy finally gets home to where her aunt and uncle live. They are very glad to see her safe and sound.

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, written by L. Frank Baum, is an enjoyable American classic .What I loved most were Dorothy's trustworthy friends, who were always there when Dorothy needed help. Dorothy is also loved by everyone for her sweetness and honesty. If you have not read it, why don't you give yourself a treat?
