What can we do whenever Earth faces a disaster? Is the only solution running away from the planet in spaceships? The latest Chinese sci-fi movie, The Wondering Earth, offers a different and more ambitious(有雄心的)idea.

The film is based on a short story by Chinese sci-fi writer Liu Cixin. In the film, Earth is in danger of being destroyed by the dying sun. Humans around the world work together to build a giant engine system that will push Earth away from the sun. We're taking the Earth with us to run away.

What makes The Wandering Earth different from Hollywood-style space films? It's probably the special cultural background. For thousands of years, “homeland” has rooted in the hearts and minds of Chinese people. One old saying is luoyeguigen. It means returning to one’s homeland in old age, like fallen leaves returning to the roots of their tree. There are also many ancient poems about homeland. “The season called the White Dew begins tonight / Nowhere as in our native place is the moon so bright” (露從今夜白,月是故多明). These all show that Chinese people have the tight bond(情感紐帶) with their homeland.

What is Chinese sci-fi? Guo Fan, the film’s director said: “Chinese sci-fi is a way to express our cultural and the spiritual core (精神內(nèi)核). Otherwise, we’re just imitating(模仿)others and telling the same American stories.” And the film was released on February 5, 2019, the first day of Chinese New Year. It was a time when many people had just made the hard journey back to their hometowns. It seems the best time to tell this Chinese sci-fi story. Anyway, to us Chinese, Earth goes wherever humans go, because it's our home.

Mukbang, a South Korean word, means “eating broadcast(吃播)”. It is an online broadcast in which a host eats tons of food while talking with the people watching him or her. It began in South Korea in around 2010 and has spread all over the world.

Why did mukbang first appear in South Korea? Jeff Yang, an Asian-American cultural critic(評論家), thinks that it’s down to “the loneliness of unmarried or uncoupled South Koreans”. He believes that eating on your own can be hard in a country like South Korea, where social eating is such a long tradition. However, eating alone is becoming increasingly common. It seems that mukbang gives people the feeling that they are part of something larger.

Alice Stride, a spokeswoman for the Campaign to End Loneliness, says, “It might bring someone great comfort to watch mukbang.” She adds that she would be worried if younger people were watching people eat instead of eating with friends or family, but for older people it could be a comfort. “If you can’t get out, if you’re ill for example, then perhaps that will bring you a great sense of comfort. On the whole, though, we would advocate face-to-face communication. It’s something that won’t change.”

“I would always encourage people to do whatever makes them feel better as long as it is a healthy habit,” says Ben Edwards, a relationship expert. “I doubt if mukbang is a healthy way to have a meal. But I think if people feel like watching other people eat, and it gives them some sort of satisfaction, I see no harm.”

2.According to Jeff Yang, it is difficult for South Koreans to eat alone because they_____________.

A. have the culture of eating together B. are supporters of ending loneliness

C. like joining a larger group D. usually have a big family

3.Which of the following is probably Alice Stride’s opinion?

A. Mukbang helps lots of people feel less lonely.

B. Older people are more interested in mukbang.

C. Younger people should offer more comfort to older people.

D. Younger people should eat with their friends and family a lot.

4.What does the underlined word “advocate” in Paragraph 3 probably mean in Chinese?

A. 觀察 B. 提倡 C. 建立 D. 評估

5.What does Ben Edwards think of mukbang?

A. It is difficult to do. B. It is healthy for the host.
