There was once a farmer who had an excellent olive(橄欖樹)orchard(果園). He was very hard-working and the farm always prospered(繁榮)with his efforts. But he knew that his three sons didn’t like the farm work at all and they were thirsty for wealth.

When the farmer felt that his life had to come to an end, he called his three sons to him and said, “Dear sons, there is a pot of gold hidden somewhere in the olive orchard. Go and dig for it if you want it.”

The sons tried to ask him in which part he had put the gold, but he didn’t tell them. After the farmer died, the three sons went to dig for the gold although they didn’t know where the hiding-place was. They dug and dug until they turned the whole land upside down but no pot of gold was found. It seemed that someone might have stolen it. The three sons were disappointed to have all their work for nothing.

As the next olive season arrived, the olive trees in the orchard had more fruit than few years ago. When all the fruit was sold out, the three sons got a lot of gold from it. Suddenly, they realized that their clever father led them to discover the wealth and find out “the hidden gold” by themselves.

根據(jù)第一句“had an excellent olive orchard”可知是橄欖園,句中“with horses and cows”表述錯誤。

根據(jù)第三段第一句“The sons tried to ask him in which part he had put the gold, but he didn’t tell them”可知他沒有告訴他兒子金子在哪,句中“The old farmer told his sons”表述錯誤。

根據(jù)第三段“It seemed that someone might have stolen it”看起來似乎有人把金子偷了,可知“The three sons thought someone might have stolen the gold”表述正確。

根據(jù)第三段“The three sons were disappointed to have all their work for nothing”可知橄欖園里沒有藏著金子。 There was no gold hidden in the olive orchard at all”表述正確。

最后一句“they realized that their clever father led them to discover the wealth and find out ‘the hidden gold’ by themselves”可知父親告訴兒子如果要發(fā)財需要自己動手,努力工作才能找到隱藏的財富。“The old farmer taught his sons a lesson to make them understand the meaning of hard work”表述正確。

I grew up in the 1960s. I was taught from an early age to send a handwritten thank-you note showing gratitude for kindness. My mother used to buy me a box of stationery(信紙)and teach me the value of saying “thank you”. She turned out to be right.

Amit Kumar is a professor at the University of Texas. He said that people liked getting thank-you notes. However, most of us underestimate(低估)the positive feelings they will bring. He asked volunteers how they felt after they received thank-you notes. Many said they were “extremely happy.”

Dr Kumar found that it took most volunteers less than five minutes to write the thank-you notes. Just five minutes to make another person feel “extremely happy”! Yet, in reality, the idea of getting an actual pen, writing an actual note, finding a stamp and a mailbox, never seems to come to mind. We usually do what is convenient for us—a quick text or an email.

It’s easy to say “I’m busy,” but even very busy businessmen find time to write thank-you notes. Take Doug Conant for example. When he became CEO of Campbell’s Soup, the company had lost half of its market value. It was bad for morale(士氣). He started fixing that by writing to every employee. In his ten years as Campbell’s CEO, Conant wrote over 30,000 notes in all. Not surprisingly, the company turned around.

While people always like getting thank-you notes, sending the note in time is also important. The late(已故的)Princess Diana(戴安娜王妃)was known to write a note as soon as she returned home from an event and have it posted right away.

Professor Kumar’s experiment, Doug Conant and Princess Diana prove my mother’s instruction that an expression of kindness in this fast-paced world still works. Thanks, Mom.

1The writer’s mother used to buy him a box of stationery and teach him _________.

2According to Professor Kumar’s experiment, people feel _________.

3The underlined part in Paragraph 4 probably means “ _________” in Chinese.

4While people always like getting thank-you notes, sending the note in time is _________.

5The title of passage is “ _________”.

Shanghai Begins 5G Trials

Look at the top of your phone. You’ll probably see a 3G or 4G symbol. The G stands for the generation of your mobile network. Now, the age of 5G is coming.

On March 30, Shanghai vice-mayor Wu Qing made the first 5G video call on a Huawei Mate X smart phone. CGTN reported Shanghai has also become the first city in China to start testing 5G networks.

5G is about 100 times faster than 4G. It will bring faster mobile Internet, but people can also use it for many other things, such as self-driving cars. There is a big area of discussion about self-driving cars, which we’ve all seen a lot of news about, but we haven’t seen a lot of real cars driving themselves on the streets because it is not safe enough. However, 5G is so much faster, it could allow cars to talk to each other in time, so they can know clearly when other cars are switching lanes, going off the road, passing another car, going too fast and so on. This will help avoid accidents. So probably there will be more self-driving cars in the near future with the help of 5G.

A.BeijingB.ShanghaiC.ChongqingD.Shenzhen
