Daisy was in the bathroom of her flat. She was brushing her teeth and the tap(水龍頭) was on. Water was coming into the sink.
"Turn that tap off, " a voice said loudly. Daisy looked round, but saw no one. "Turn that tap off. You're wasting water, " the voice sounded again.
"Who…who are you?" "I'm water. It's not easy for me to get here. Do you know where I'm from?"
"From the tap,of course. "said Daisy.
"Yes, yes, but before that?" the voice said. "24 days ago,I was in a cloud in Jiangxi, enjoying the sights comfortably. Then the cloud dropped me into a stream and I ran down the mountain into the Yangtze River. It carried me to a lake. I stayed there for a few days, and then I travelled a long way and ran into the Huangpu River. Then it was time to get cleaned up. "
"Cleaned up?" Daisy was surprised.
"Yes. I was dirty after my journey so they took me to a water factory. They gave me a cleaning and added a few chemicals(化學品)to me. Then I travelled in the pipes under the streets. I waited there until you called me,and here I am. "
Daisy said,"So this is the end of your journey. "
"No. When you've finished with me, I'll go to a sewage plant(污水處理廠). Then they'll pour me into the river and I'll be back in the sea again. "
"Again?"
"Yes. That' s where I came from in the first place. Remember not to waste me or make me dangerously dirty. I' m precious(珍貴)like gold. See you. "
"Wait a minute. What do you mean by that?" But there was no answer. The water left.

We often find that weekends and holidays feel so short while classes and work feel so long. Actually, though, we know that this is not true. But we still wonder where that strange feeling comes from. In fact, this is one of the ways that we’re tricked by time, according to the website All That Is Interesting. The website lists several wrong impressions we often have about time. Let's have a look. First of all, emotions affect our time-keeping abilities: Negative emotions, especially anxiety and boredom, make time seem longer because they make us concentrate more on the passage of time. However, when we are enjoying ourselves, we pay more attention to what we are doing and are likely to lose track of (失去對...的意識) time.
Here is another example. In 2007, a group of scientists carried out a test. In the test, people fell 50 meters into a safety net and were then asked about their experience. Although the experience took shorter than 3 seconds, the people thought it was much longer than it actually was.
This is because of the way our bodies reply to danger, according to the scientists. Our bodies produce a chemical called adrenaline (腎上腺素) when we are faced with danger. It allows us to concentrate better so that we can stay alive. As a result, we are able to remember far more details (細節(jié)) over a short period of time, which makes it seem like time is going more slowly.
Another situation when we make mistakes about time is when we take afternoon naps(午覺). Have you ever had trouble telling what time it is after a long nap? That's because the best amount of time for a nap is 20 minutes. After 20 minutes, you enter a new stage of sleep called slow-wave sleep. If you wake up mid-way in this stage, it will take a while before you can correctly perceive(感知)time again. Yes, time can be mysterious and there is no way to control it. So, perhaps the best thing to do is to make good use of every minute.
1.According to the passage, what possibly makes people feel so long?
A.weekends and holidays B.weekends and work. C.classes and work D.holidays and work
2.Which will not affect our time-keeping abilities according to the website listing?
A.negative emotions B.positive emotions C.adrenaline D.scientists
3.According to the passage, in which situation don’t we make mistakes about time?
A.We wake up after a long nap.
B.We fall down from a high place.
C.We have many problems left in the test paper, but the time is up.
D.We go to school on the school bus as usual on weekdays.
4.According to the passage, what will NOT happen when we are faced with danger?
A.Our bodies will produce a chemical called adrenaline.
B.We are able to feel that time seems to go more slowly.
C.Adrenaline will make us concentrate better to stay alive.
D.We will forget far more details over a short period of time.
5.Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?
A.Negative emotions make time seem longer.
B.We feel like time is going more slowly while having fun.
C.Time can be mysterious and there is no way to control it.
D.If we wake up mid-way after a long nap, maybe we can't correctly perceive time again soon.

Some students get so nervous before an exam that they do poorly even if they know the material. Sian Beilock, a psychology (心理學) professor at the University of Chicago, has studied these highly anxious (焦慮的) exam-takers.
“They start worrying about the results. They might even start worrying about whether this exam is going to prevent them from getting into the college they want. And when we worry,it actually uses up attention and memory resources that we could otherwise be using to focus (集中) on the exam.” says Sian Beilock.
The researchers tested the idea on a group of twenty anxious college students. They gave them two short math tests. After the first one, they asked the students to either sit quietly or write about their feelings about the coming second test.
The researchers added to the pressure. They told the students that those who did well on the second exam would get money. They also told them that their performance would affect other students as part of a team effort.
Professor Beilock says those who sat quietly scored an average of 20% worse on the second exam. But the students who had written about their fears improved their performance by an average of 5%.
Next, the researchers used younger students in a biology class. They told them before final exams either to write about their feelings or to think about things not connected to the test.
Professor Beilock says highly anxious students who wrote about their feelings got an average grade of B+,compared with a B-for those who did not.
But what can they do if students do not have a chance to write about their fears immediately before an exam or presentation? Professor Beilock says students can try it themselves at home or in the library and they can still improve their performance.

A. focus your attention on the exam B. be as serious as you can about the exam

3.The underlined word “it” in the last paragraph means “_______”.
A. looking for a chance B. preparing for the exam
C. writing about the feelings D. taking the exam
4.We can infer (推斷) from the study that students who sit quietly before the exam ______.
