【題目】
The Colosseum is an ancient stadium in the center of Rome. It is the largest of its kind. It is very old. They started building it in the year 70. It took ten years to build. It is still around today.
The Colosseum has been used in many ways. In ancient Rome, men fought each other in it. They fought against lions, tigers, and bears. It was terrible. But most of the people loved it. As many as 80,000 Romans would pack inside to watch. These gruesome events went on until 523.
The Colosseum has been damaged many times over the years. It was struck by lightning in the year 217. This started a fire. Much of the Colosseum is made of stone. But the fire damaged the upper levels. They were made of wood. This damage took many years to repair. It was not finished until the year 240.
The worst damage happened in 1349. A mighty earthquake shook Rome and the Colosseum. The south side of the building collapsed ( 坍塌). Pieces of the arena ( 場地) were all over the ground. Many people took the fallen stones. Others took stones from the seating areas. They used them to repair houses and churches.
The Romans of those days were not connected to the Colosseum. It had last been used as a castle. Before that it was a graveyard. It has been hundreds of years since the games. The damage to the Colosseum was never repaired. It's a good thing the outer wall of it still stands strong.
Today the Colosseum is one of Rome's most popular attractions. People from all over the world come to Italy to see it. The Pope leads a big march around it every Good Friday. It is a symbol that many know. It has even appeared on the back of a coin. I guess that makes it a symbol that many people want too.

【題目】 Research has already suggested that opening a book may help improve brain function and reduce stress. Now, a team led by Joanna Sikora of the Australian National University is looking into the benefits of growing up around a bookfilled environment; the researchers' new study suggests that homes with libraries can arm children with skills that last well into adulthood.
The study looked at data from 160 000 adults from 31 countries, including the United States, Australia, Turkey and Chile. Participants (參與者) filled out surveys with the Programme for the International Assessment of Competencies, which measures proficiency (水平) in three areas: literacy (讀寫能力), numeracy and information communication technology. People, 25 to 65 years old, were asked to tell how many books were in their house when they were 16 years old. The research team was interested in this question because home library size can be a good sign of “bookoriented socialization.” Participants were able to choose from a given range of books that included everything from“10 or less” to “more than 500.”
The surveys, which were taken between 2011 and 2015, showed that the average (平均的) number of books in participants' childhood homes was 115, but that number varied widely from country to country. The average library size in Norway was 212 books, for example; in Turkey, it was 27. In all, however, it seemed that more books in the home was linked to higher proficiency in the areas tested by the survey.
The effects were most marked when it came to literacy. Growing up with few books in the home resulted in below average literacy levels. Being surrounded by 80 books raised the levels to average, and literacy continued to improve until libraries reached about 350 books,at which point the literacy rates leveled off. The researchers saw similar things when it came to numeracy; the effects were not as pronounced with information communication technology tests, but skills did improve with increased numbers of books.
So, what does the new study tell us? Take, for example, an adult who grew up with hardly any books in the home, but went on to get a university degree compared to an adult who grew up with a large home library, but only had nine years of schooling. The study found that both of their literacy levels were almost the same. “So, literacywise, bookish childhood makes up for a good deal of educational advantage,” the study authors write.
Further research is needed to decide exactly why exposure to ( 沉浸在) books in childhood encourages valuable skills later in life, but the study offers further evidence to suggest that reading has a powerful effect on the mind. And so home library size might be important because, as the researchers note, “children emulate (模仿) parents who read.”
【1】The second paragraph is mainly about .
A.what the study found out
B.how the study was carried out
C.who were invited to the research
D.why the researchers did the study
【2】The phrase “leveled off” in Paragraph 4 probably means “ ”.
A.backed to averageB.started falling
C.continued to growD.stopped rising
【3】The example in Paragraph 5 shows .
A.the disadvantage of having little school education
B.the effect of having a home library in childhood
C.the necessity of raising people's literacy level
D.the importance of getting a university degree
【4】What can we learn from the passage?
A.The study explained why bookish childhood encouraged valuable skills.
B.Adults benefit more from a home library than children.
C.Home library size has little to do with numeracy level.
D.Parents who love reading benefit children a lot.

New research has found the longest living animal on Earth with a backbone is a shark.
The research, published in Science Magazine, found the Greenland shark is the longest living animal with a backbone in the world. The gray-colored sharks live in the cold water of the Arctic and are named after Greenland, the world's largest island. After examining one of these sharks, scientists decided it was born in the icy water about 400 years ago and died out recently.
An international team of biologists and physicists was able to estimate (估計(jì))the ages of 28 dead female Greenland sharks by studying the lenses of their eyes. It is a new way to learn the age of an animal. Eight of the sharks were probably 200 years old or more, and could even have been 300 years old. That would make them older than some whales, which earlier were believed to have been the oldest animals at about 211 years old, according to the Associated Press.
This discovery also means that Greenland sharks can live more than three times longer than humans. Many people these days can expect to live into their eighties. African elephants average about 70 years. The oldest of the Greenland sharks the scientists studied was nearly 5 meters long. It was thought to have been 392 years old when it was caught four years ago. However, because the testing method is so new, it is not exact.
The study's lead expert is Julius Nielsen, a marine biologist from Denmark. He says the 392 number could have an error range (誤差范圍)of 120 years in either direction. That means the shark was probably born sometime between the years 1500 and 1740, with 1620 being the most likely.
"It's an estimate. It’s not a determination, “Nielsen said. "It is the best we can do."
Even at the lowest age, the shark would have been 272 years old when it died and still would be the longest-living animal with a backbone, Nielsen said.
“I don't know why they get so old, but I hope someone will find out, "Nielsen said.
【1】According to Science Magazine, the Greenland shark______.
A.is the longest living animal on earthB.seldom lives in the cold water of the Arctic
C.is an animal with a backboneD.still lives in the icy water now
【2】A new way to learn the age of a female animal is________ .
A.to estimate it by a biologistB.to examine its skin
C.to study the lenses of its eyesD.to discover the place of its birth
【3】The discovery means if people live into eighties, the shark might live into____years old.
A.almost 200B.less than 211C.over 320D.at least 450
【4】Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?
A.The oldest of the Greenland sharks was nearly five meters long.
B.It can make sure that the oldest Greenland shark was 392 years old.
C.Julius Nielsen says the 392 number could have an error range of 120 years.
D.Julius Nielsen has tried to estimate the probable time the shark was born.
【5】The author will probably write about______ after the last paragraph.
A.the discovery of why sharks get so oldB.the living habits of the sharks

【題目】
The coast redwood is the unchallenged tallest of North American's trees. But do you know it grows from a seed (種子) that is smaller than a pea?
What's special about redwoods?
Redwoods are special for a couple of reasons. The first is their size. Imagine standing next to a tree which is the height of a 30-floor building. The second is their age. Redwoods usually grows to about 600 years old. Some are even more than 2000 years old.
Where do redwoods grow?
To find a coast redwood, you'll have to go to Oregon or California. The land along the west coast, about 450 miles long and up to 35 miles wide, is home to the redwoods. Coast redwoods do not grow anywhere else in the world.
Why do redwoods grow there?
The coast of the Pacific Ocean provides a special environment for the redwoods. Cool, wet air comes from the ocean and keeps the trees wet all year. That is important because most of the rain falls between October and May. During the dry summer months, the trees depend on the wet air over the coast.
How do redwoods survive?
Redwoods have a couple of protection systems(系統(tǒng)). The skin of an adult redwood tree can grow to as thick as 12 inches. The thick covering protects the lower part of the tree from fire damage. Also, most of a redwood's branches and leaves are high up on the tree. This keeps them safe from forest fires. Redwoods are safe from insect damage because the wood has a bitter-tasting chemical.
What should I do?
If you ever get a chance, visit a redwood forest. Look among the tree trunks and imagine who might have camped there a thousand years ago. Look upward and just imagine how high the trees might grow if we protect them.
【1】To see a redwood tree, you should go to _______.
A.the west coast of North America
B.the coast of the Atlantic Ocean
C.South American coast
D.anywhere in the world
【2】What is important for redwoods to grow in dry seasons?
A.Rain fall.B.Sea water.C.Wet air.D.Ocean life.
【3】Redwoods are safe from forest fires because of
A.their tasteB.their chemicalC.their systemsD.their colors
【4】If you want to know how big coast redwoods are, under which question should you look?
A.What's special about redwoods?
B.Where do redwoods grow?
C.Why do redwoods grow there?
D.How do redwoods survive?
【5】What is the author's main purpose for writing this passage?
A.To praise.B.To suggest.C.To introduce.D.To question.
