Do you see a robin (知更鳥)? Robins are common birds that live in Asia, Europe and Africa. They are small, about 14 centimeters long, with the weight of about 20 grams. They have dark heads and red chests.

A good place to see robins is your own backyard. Robins don’t seem to mind being around people. You may also see robins on lawns (草坪) in parks. They like eating worms and bugs best.

Early in spring, robins build their nests in trees. Some robins can live up to 12 years. These birds may build 20 or even 30 nests in their lifetime! The nests are made of grass, sticks and mud. The mud puts everything together.

The mother robin lays one egg for three or four days. She sits on them to keep them warm. The eggs are blue. After the babies hatch (孵化), both the mother and the father feed them.

Most robins stay at one place through the four seasons. But some of them will fly to southern countries in winter.

Each summer, you hear news that some sports players are sent to hospitals because it is too hot. Our bodies can't be outside in the sun for a long time. So in hot summers,be careful about playing sports outside.

Firstly,to play sports safely in hot weather, you must drink water. Sports drinks are great for athletes, but they have so much sugar that they'll dehydrate(使脫水)you more. However, drinking a few bottles of sports drinks will be good for you.

Secondly,be sure to take enough breaks to let your body rest. If your coach doesn't let you take enough breaks in the heat, don't wait until you feel uncomfortable. Just be honest with your coach when you need breaks.

Thirdly, when you have a break, don't sit in the sun. With the sun beating down on you, you'll only heat up and sweat(冒汗)more. Take a seat under a tree,or even better,go indoors for a little while. Cooling yourself down can help you stay active longer.

Fourthly, remember that the earlier in the day you start your exercise, the cooler it will be. If you can start practice before the sun comes up,you have a few good hours to practise in the cool hours of the morning. Also, the earlier you practise, the earlier you can finish the exercise. If you need more practice time, come back to the field later in the evening, when the sun is setting.

Last but not least, you should watch what you eat. Eat food which is high in water, starch(淀粉)and carbonhydrate(糖類),but be sure to get a good balance in your diet.

As long as you pay attention to the above, playing sports safely in the heat isn't a difficult thing.

American and British people both speak English of course. But sometimes there are some important differences between British English and American English.

First of all, they sound very different. Often, Americans don’t say each word separately. They say words together. Americans may say “I dunno” instead of “I don’t know”. Or they may say “Whaddya say?” instead of “What did you say?” However, the British are more careful. They usually say all the words and keep them separate.

Sound is not the only difference. Words sometimes have different meanings too. For example, the vocabulary (詞匯) for cars and driving is very different. Americans drive trucks, but in England people drive lorries.

Many expressions (表達(dá)) are also different in the two countries. In England, if you are going to telephone your friends, you “phone them up”. In America, you “give them a call”. When you are saying goodbye in England you might say “Cheerio!” In America you might say “See you later.”

There are also some differences in grammar (語法). For example, Americans usually use the helping verb “do” when they ask a question. They say “Do you have a storybook?” But the British often leave out the helping verb. They say “Have you a storybook?”

Most languages are like this. Languages change over time. When people live in separate places, the languages change in different ways. This is what has happened to English. It can also happen to other languages, such as French. Many people in Canada speak French but their French is very different from the French of France.

1.What does the underlined word “separately” mean in this passage?

A. 含糊地 B.快速地 C. 分開地 D. 簡略地

2.The vocabulary for cars and driving is ________________.

A. an example of British English

B. an example of American English

C. the same in America and England

D. not the same in America and England

3.Which of the following is RIGHT?

A. American people usually say “I don’t know” instead of “I dunno”.

B. There are four differences between American and British English.

C. Canadians speak all the same French as Frenchmen

D. When people live in different places, the languages change in the same ways.

4.This passage is mainly about ___________________.

A. English vocabulary

B how American sounds are different from British sounds.

C the way the British say words.

D some differences between American and British English.
