If music makes you smarter and exercise helps you to think, surely exercising to music can turn you into an intelligent person.
A team of scientists from Ohio State University did experiments on 33 volunteers who were getting better from heart disease following operation. They found that people who exercised while listening to Italian musician Antonio Vivaldi’s “The Four Seasons” did much better on language ability tests than without music.
“Facts suggest that exercise improve the learning ability of people with heart disease,” said the psychologist(心理學家) Charles Emery, who led the study. “And listening to music is thought to enhance understanding. We just wanted to put the two results together,” he added.
The volunteers said they felt better emotionally after working out with or without the music. But their improvement on the test doubled after listening to music during exercise. Scientists have proved that music can be good for health, education and well-being. It helps reduce stress, sadness and nervousness; encourages relaxation or sleep; wakes up the body and improves memory and thoughts.
In medical fields, music is used widely for patients who have had head hurts before and after operation. “The Four Seasons” was used because of its moderate tempo(舒緩的節(jié)拍) and positive results in earlier research. “Exercise seems to cause positive changes in the nervous system and these changes may have a direct result on learning ability,” Emery said.
Scientists have been studying the results of music on understanding since the early 1950s. By 1990, psychologists were using Mozart’s music, especially his violin pieces, to help children with speech disorders. Mozart was chosen because his music is not over-exciting and has clear structures. A study showed students who listened to Mozart went on to score higher marks in an intelligence test. With important exams drawing near, your parents will not probably allow you to listen to music. But perhaps now you have good reasons to argue with them.

When I was a kid, I always wanted to go camping. I was thirteen when my brother Jackie, who was twenty, finally agreed to take me on a camping trip. We decided to take a coach to the nearby town. Once we got there, we’d find a place to set up our tent and spend the night. It seemed simple!
As soon as my parents drove us to the coach station on Saturday morning, Jackie and I got on the coach happily. However, halfway to the town, my head began to ache. And it just got worse and worse. Finally, I couldn’t stand it any longer. Jackie had no choice but to get off the coach with me. He was quite disappointed.
There we were, in the middle of nowhere. We didn’t have a phone with us and neither of us knew how to get home, so we just walked. About half an hour later, we came to a small town. Luckily, there was a train station. We bought two train tickets and came to the waiting room. After the inspector(查票員) checked our tickets, I saw somebody. I said to my brother excitedly, “Jackie, look! Is that our favorite writer? The man in a blue shirt and black jeans?”
Jackie looked back and said in excitement, “Oh, yes, Tony!” Then he added, “But I don’t think we can go back to the waiting room now!”
“That's okay! At least we’ve ‘met’ him,” I said. “Now, I guess the headache isn’t that upsetting!”

Mechanical Engineering
Do you like to build with blocks? Have you ever wondered how planes stay in the air? Do you like to design and create new things? If you do,a career(職業(yè))in mechanical engineering might be right for you!
A mechanical engineer is responsible for coming up with and designing mechanical systems. Mechanical systems can include machine design, heating and cooling equipment, and product design.
Mechanical engineers are in high need right now. There are a lot of job openings for mechanical engineers, but there aren't enough people to fill those jobs. Because there is a high need for engineers and the work requires specialized knowledge, engineers get paid more than some other careers.
To be a mechanical engineer, you need to graduate from college with a bachelor's(學士)degree. In college, you will learn problem solving and critical thinking skills.
Problem solving is very important in the field of mechanical engineering. To come up with the best solution to a problem, mechanical engineers need to think in different ways. They also need to be creative, because they may need to make something that's never been made before. Paying attention to details(細節(jié))is important as well. Many designs depend on a lot of little details.
Mechanical engineers also need to be able to use different tools, such as calculators,high-speed cameras, and computers. There are many computer programs mechanical engineers use to create designs, run scenarios(方案),and do research.
As with many other jobs, mechanical engineers should be able to meet deadlines(期限)and work well with other people. Some jobs can be done with just one person, but more often mechanical engineers work on a team to complete a project. If an engineer cannot manage his or her time well and misses a deadline, the whole team gets delayed(拖延).
Some engineers work in an office, and some travel to different worksites while a machine or product is being built,so they can help solve any problems.
Mechanical engineering takes a lot of thought. It is a great career for people who like to make objects and machines work, solve problems, and be creative!
1.What is a mechanical engineer responsible for?
2.To be a mechanical engineer, what will a student learn in college?
3.How can mechanical engineers come up with the best solution to a problem?
4.Why should a mechanical engineer be able to meet deadlines?
5.Where do mechanical engineers work?
