14.Even kids know that we should wait f or the traffic light to turn green before crossing a road, but not everybody follows this basic rule.
"Chinese style road crossing"has become a hot expression recently.Chinese people"cross roads without thinking about traffic lights,so long as they are part of a cro wd",said a post on Sina Weibo.
A CCTV news program showed that in only an hour, more than 600 people ran red lights when crossing a road in Shijiazhuang,Hebei.
Many people say that they jaywalk (亂穿馬路) because the red light lasts too long.Such an opinion is supported by a research team at Tongji University.
The team did research on people's waiting times at different road crossings from 2008 to 2010.They found that Chinese people would wait for 70 to 90 seconds before they lost their patience.
"People are likely to run the red lightwhen the waiting time is longer than they can bear (忍受),"said Ni Ying,a member of the research team.
However,a survey on Sina Weibo shows that nearly half of respondents (調(diào)查對象) believe that people jaywalk mainly because they disregard (忽視) rules.
"I always obey(遵守) traffic rules.Time is important but safety should come first,"wrote"Qixiaoe"on Weibo.
Many countries give out punishments to jaywalkers. In Singapore, the maximum can be three months in prison. Some Chinese cities have started taking some actions, too. For example, the first three people in a jaywalking group will be fined (罰款) 50 yuan in Shijiazhuang.
But calling on people to respect rules is more important."To completely solve the problem, everyone should realize the importance of obeying the traffic rules,"Wang Jianping,a professor at Sichuan University, said to Huaxi Metropolis Daily.

9."Can I borrow the car,Dad?"
"Not until you finish mowing(除) the lawn."
"But I have to go to work!"
Sounds familiar?It would to an American teenager-----a job,a car,spending money,walking the dog and mowing the lawn.This isn't just the boring life of middle age but,in fact,this is the life of many American teenagers.
In the US,it is common for kids as young as 14to hold part-time jobs.They might save up their money to buy a car and,at 16,actually drive it.But this kind of independence(獨(dú)立) isn't always fun.US kids need to take care of themselves and their younger brothers and sisters so that they are ready to live alone.

Is it better to live this way?It's good to cook for oneself and do laundry,but US students don't study enough.While American kids are working,Chinese and Indian students are studying.
The truth is,whatever you do now, you will never feel ready to be an adult.

36.What does the conversation at the beginning of the passage suggest?A
A.American teenagers need to do housework at home.

C.American kids have enough time to study.
D.It's not all good for American kids to be independent early.
