In English, when someone is very angry we say this person “sees red”, like a bull goes wild after seeing a red cloth. Now it turns out that “seeing red” is not just an expression for angry people, but also a scientific fact.
Researchers at North Dakota State University in the US found that there is a connection between the color red and anger. Angry people really do “see red” where others don’t. And a preference for red over blue may even suggest a more hostile personality.
The study includes a number of experiments. In the first, researchers asked a group of people which color they preferred, red or blue. Participants (參加者) then did personality tests. Results showed that those who chose red tended to be more hostile.
During a second test, participants looked at faded images that could be regarded either red or blue. Those who saw red scored 25 percent higher on hostility in the personality test.
“Hostile people have hostile thoughts; hostile thoughts are connected with the color red, and therefore hostile people see this color more frequently,” the researchers told The Independent.
Finally, the participants were told about imaginary situations in which they could take different actions. Results showed that in these situations, red-preferring people were more likely to show that they would harm another person than those who preferred blue.
“An important message from this research is that color can send psychological (心理的) meaning,” the researchers said.
Where does this connection between the color red and anger come from? Scientists said it might be a matter of evolution (進(jìn)化). In ancient times, poisonous plants and insects could cause wounds and bleeding. So it may have become instinctive (本能的) for people to link the color red with danger and threats.

A. legend story傳奇故事;B. funny joke有趣笑話;C. scientific fact科學(xué)事實(shí);D. useful suggestion有用的建議。 Now it turns out that “seeing red” is not just an expression for angry people, but also a scientific fact可知,seeing red還是一個(gè)科學(xué)事實(shí),C選項(xiàng)符合題意,故應(yīng)選C。
根據(jù)原文第二段there is a connection between the color red and anger. Angry people really do“see red”where others don’t可知,紅色和憤怒之間存在聯(lián)系,可推斷對(duì)紅色的偏愛(ài)甚至可能意味著更具敵意的性格,hostile此處應(yīng)意為“有敵意的、不友好的”,A選項(xiàng)“不友好的”最為符合題意,故應(yīng)選A。
A. lower更低的;B. higher更高的;C. more更多的;D. cheerful興高采烈的。 Those who saw red scored 25 percent higher on hostility in the personality test可知,那些看到紅色的人在性格測(cè)試中的敵意得分比其他人高25%,故應(yīng)選B。

Participants were tested on seven different colors. D. Blue-preferring people were less likely to harm others. 根據(jù)原文第三段researchers asked a group of people which color they preferred, red or blue可知,參與者只接受了兩種顏色的偏好測(cè)試,即紅色和藍(lán)色,故C選項(xiàng)說(shuō)法不正確,故應(yīng)選C。
A. It tells us scientists’ new findings. It explains why red is connected to anger.
Happiness is a feeling that lights up your eyes, makes your steps light and makes you want to sing for no reason. Everyone wants to be happy. But sometimes, a guest comes in without invitation. It’s unhappiness. Don’t let it get you down. Send it away!
When you are happy, the world feels like a better place. As a saying goes: When you smile, the world smiles with you; when you cry, you cry alone. Wearing a smile will make you more charming and help you to win lots of friends. A good mood always gives you hope, which makes trouble and problems easier to handle.
No matter how happy you are, it’s normal to feel angry, sad or gloomy once in a while. Life is full of ups and downs. We can’t change the way life is, but we can do our best to change a bad situation into a good one. To help us do this, it’s good to know some of the factors(因素) that influence happiness.
One of the biggest factors is social relationships. People who are close to family and friends are happier than people who don’t have those relationships. Talking and sharing is a good way to relax and build confidence. Knowing someone is there for you will make you braver and more outgoing.
Another factor is work or school. If you enjoy school, even if you have lots of homework or extra classes, you will still feel that your school life is meaningful and happy. But if you hate school, your negative (消極的)attitude may cause you to feel bored and upset that you have to do so much work.
A third factor is your attitude(態(tài)度) towards life. How do you feel if you fail in an exam? Maybe you think it’s unfair because you always study hard and should have got a good mark. You can’t stop blaming (責(zé)備) yourself. Or, maybe you accept it. You go through the paper carefully, find out why you made stupid mistakes, and tell yourself, “Take it easy! I’ll do better next time!” Your attitude makes a big difference.
Do you smile a lot or wear a long face most of the time?
【1】How many factors can influence happiness in the passage?
【2】What will make you more charming and help you to win lots of friends?
【3】How will you feel if you enjoy school?

【5】What’s your understanding of the underlined sentence “Life is full of ups and downs”?
【6】Do you feel happy in your daily life? If so, what do you do to make yourself happy? If not, what makes you unhappy?
