John Glenn will always be remembered as the first American to orbit(繞……軌道而行)the earth．On February 20, 1962, a year after Yuri Gagarin's epic first orbit in the Vostok I spaceship, Glenn made three orbits in Friendship 7．When he returned to America after splashing down in the Atlantic Ocean, he was welcomed like a hero．
In 1964 Glenn resigned(辭職)from the space programme to go into politics．In 1974 he was elected(選舉)to the US Senate(參議院)for the state of Ohio．He won re-election to the Senate in l 980 and again six years later．
In 1998 Cam John Glenn had his most amazing adventure(冒險的經(jīng)歷)．At the age of 77 he became the oldest astronaut when he went into space as a member of the team of the space shuttle(航天飛機)Discovery．His trip was supposed to investigate(調(diào)查)the effects(影響)of space on older people．But even Glenn said that the scientific part of the trip was not as important as going into space for a second time．“It's just such a wonderful experience to be in space again,”he said．
