A woman lost her handbag. There was plenty of money in it. So she made a promise, “If someone finds my handbag and returns it to me, I’ll give half the money to him.”

A cleaner found it in a garbage box. He sent it back to the loser. But the woman changed her mind.

“There was still an expensive watch in my handbag,” said the loser. “I won’t give half the money in my handbag to you until you return it to me.”

“I’ve never seen a watch in the handbag,” said the cleaner.

They began to argue. The woman refused to do what she had said. The cleaner became angry and took her before a judge(法官).

After the judge heard what happened to them, he said to the woman, “I’m sure you are an honest woman. It’s true that you have lost a handbag in which there was a watch. But it is also clear that there is only a lot of money in this handbag. I don’t think it is yours. Wait for some man. Perhaps someone will be able to return it to you!”

Then the judge turned to the cleaner and said, “Take the handbag home. If the loser doesn’t go to get it back in three days, it will belong to you!”
