The baby is just one day old and has not left hospital yet. She is quiet but alert(警覺的). The researchers have placed a white card with two black spots on it twenty centimeters from her face. She stares at it carefully.

A researcher removes the card and replaces it by another one, this time with the spots differently spaced. As the cards change from one to the other, her gaze(凝視) starts to lose its focus until a third card is presented. The third card has three black spots on it. Her gaze comes back: she looks at it for twice as long as she did at the precious card. Can she tell that the number two is different from three, just 24 hours after coming into the world? Or do newborns simply prefer more to fewer? The same experiment, but with three spots shown before two, shows the same return of interest when the number of spots changes. Perhaps it is just the newness? When a little older babies were shown cards with pictures of objects (a comb, a key, an orange and so on), changing the number of objects had an effect separate from changing the objects themselves. Could it be the pattern that two things make, as opposed to three? No again. Babies paid more attention to squares moving randomly on a screen when their number changed from two to three, or three to two. The effect even crosses between senses. Babies who were repeatedly shown two spots became more excited when they then heard three beats of the drum than when they heard just two; similarly, when the researchers started beats of the drum and moved to spots.

1.What's the experiment described in Paragraph 1 mainly about?

A.The baby's sense of sight. B.The baby's sense of touch.

C.The baby's sense of smell. D.The baby's sense of hearing

2.Babies are alert to the change in . '

A.the size of cards B.the color of pictures

C.the shape of patterns D.the number of objects

3.Why did the researchers test the babies with beats of the drum?

A.Because they wanted to keep the babies' interests.

B.Because they wanted to carry the experiment further.

C.Because they wanted to see how babies recognize sounds.

D.Because they wanted to reduce the difficulty of the experiment.

4.Where does this passage probably come from?

A.Children's literature. B.An advertisement.

C.Science fiction. D.A science report.

It happened two years ago. It was Mother’s Day morning. I was doing my shopping at our local supermarket with my five-year-old son, Tenyson. As we were leaving, we found that only minutes earlier an elderly woman had fallen over at the entrance and had hit her head on the ground. Her husband was with her, but there was blood everywhere and the woman was embarrassed (尷尬的) and clearly in shock. Walking towards the scene, Tenyson became very sad about what had happened to the couple. He said to me, “Mum, it’s not much fun falling over in front of everyone.”

At the front of the supermarket a charity group had set up a stand selling fish and chips and flowers to raise funds. Tenyson suggested that we should buy the lady a flower. “It will make her feel better,” he said. I was amazed that he’d come up with such a sweet idea. So we went over to the flower seller and asked her if we could buy a flower for the lady to cheer her up. “Just take it,” she replied. “I can’t take your money for such a wonderful gesture (姿勢).”

By now paramedics (救援人員) had arrived, and were attending the injured (受傷的) woman. As we walked up to her, my son became intimidated by all the blood and medical equipment (器具). He said he didn’t want to go up to her.

Instead I gave the flower to the woman’s husband and told him, “My son was very sad for your wife and wanted to give her this flower to make her feel better.”

At that, the old man started crying and said, “Thank you so much, you have a wonderful son. Happy Mother’s Day to you.”

The man then bent down and gave his wife the flower, telling her who it was from. Though badly hurt and shaken, the old lady looked up at Tenyson with love in her eyes and gave him a little smile.

1.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A.The elderly woman was knocked down by Tenyson.

B.Tenyson’s idea of buying a flower got his mother’s support.

C.Tenyson’s care for the elderly woman surprised the flower seller.

D.The elderly woman was moved to tears by Tenyson’s gesture.
