【題目】 Reading is a good habit, but the problem is, there's too much to read these days, and too little time to read every word of it. There are hundreds of skills to help you read more in less time. Here are two skills that I think are especially good.

Preview - if it's long and hard. Previewing is especially useful for getting a general idea of heavy reading like long magazine articles and business reports.

Here's how to preview.

Read the first two paragraphs and the last two paragraphs carefully.

Then read only the first sentence of the other paragraphs.

Previewing doesn't give you all the details. It keeps you from spending time on things you don't really want- or need- to read.

Skim- if it's short and simple. Skimming is a good way to get a general idea of light reading like popular magazines or the sports and entertainment of your daily paper.

Here's how to skim.

Get your eyes to move fast. Sweep them across each line.

Pick up only a few key words in each line.

Everybody skims differently. You and I may not pick up the same words when we skim the same piece, but we'll get a similar idea of what it's all about.

1What does the underlined word "preview" mean in English?

A.Read carefully and thoroughlyB.Read silently

C.Read aloudD.Read fast and skim for the general idea

2What should we NOT do when we read sports news in a daily paper according to the passage?

A.Read the last two paragraphs carefully

B.Get our eyes to move fast.

C.Sweep our eyes across each line.

D.Pick up only a few key words in each line.

3Which of the following is WRONG?

A.Skim means reading quickly. It's a good way to read.

B.There are ways for you to read more in less time.

C.By previewing you can get all the details of the passage.

D.People can spend less time doing more reading.

4What is the best title for this passage?

A.How to Read Faster.B.What to Read.

C.When to Read.D.Why We Should Read.

【答案】

1D

2A

3C

4A

【解析】

本文講述了如何提高閱讀速度的兩種方法。

1

詞句猜測(cè)題。根據(jù)“Previewing doesn't give you all the details. It keeps you from spending time on things you don't really want- or need- to read ,”可知,這種方法不會(huì)給你所有的細(xì)節(jié)。它會(huì)讓你避免花費(fèi)時(shí)間在你不想,或不需要,或不讀的東西上。所以preview指快速閱讀,略讀大意。故選D。

2

細(xì)節(jié)理解題。根據(jù)“Skimming is a good way to get a general idea of light reading like popular magazines or the sports and entertainment of your daily paperGet your eyes to move fast. Sweep them across each line. Pick up only a few key words in each line,”可知,用略讀的方式來讀運(yùn)動(dòng)新聞,使眼睛快速地移動(dòng),快速掃每一行,在每一行只撿幾個(gè)關(guān)鍵詞,結(jié)合所給選項(xiàng),A選項(xiàng)是我們不應(yīng)該做的,故選A

3

推理判斷題。根據(jù)“skimming is a good way to get a general ideaGet your eyes to move fast. Sweep them across each line,”可知,略讀就是快速地掃每一行,這是一種很好的閱讀方式,所以A選項(xiàng)正確。根據(jù)“There are hundreds of skills to help you read more in less time,”可知,有數(shù)百種技巧可能幫助你在較少的時(shí)間里讀更多的內(nèi)容,所以CD選項(xiàng)正確。根據(jù)Previewing doesn't give you all the details,”可知,預(yù)覽不會(huì)給你所有的細(xì)節(jié),所以C選項(xiàng)錯(cuò)誤。故選C。

4

最佳標(biāo)題。根據(jù)“There are hundreds of skills to help you read more in less time. Here are two skills that I think are especially good,”可知,本文主要講述了如何提高閱讀速度的兩種方法。故選A。

【題目】 We’ve all been there: in a lift, in line at the bank or on an airplane, around by people who are, like us, deeply look at their smartphones or, worse, fighting with the uncomfortable silence.

What’s the problem? It’s more likely that none of us start a conversation because it’s challenging, or we think it’s unnecessary. But the next time you find yourself among strangers, consider that small talk is worth the trouble. Experts say it’s an invaluable social practice that results in big advantages.

Small talk is the grease (潤(rùn)滑劑) for social communication, says Bernardo Carducci, director of the Shyness Research Institute at Indiana University Southeast. “Almost every great love story and each big business deal begins with small talk,” he explains. “The key to successful small talk is learning how to connect with others, not just communicate with them.”

In a 2014 study, Elizabeth Dunn, professor of psychology at UBC, invited people on their way into a coffee shop. One group was asked to look for an interaction (互動(dòng)) with its waiter; the other, to speak only when necessary. The results showed that those who chatted with their waiter reported higher positive (積極的) feelings and a better coffee shop experience. “It’s not that talking to the waiter is better than talking to your husband.” says Dunn. “But interactions with peripheral (邊緣的) members of our social network matter for our well-being also.”

Dunn believes that people who reach out to strangers feel a greater sense of belonging (歸屬感), a relationship with others. Carducci believes developing such a sense of belonging starts with small talk. “Small talk is the basis of good manners.” he says.

1What’s the main idea of Paragraph 1?

A.Interest in smartphones.B.Unsuitable behaviours in public places.

C.Absence of communication between strangers.D.Impatience with slow service.

2What does the coffee-shop study suggest about small talk?

A.It improves family relationships.B.It raises people’s confidence.

C.It matters as much as a formal talk.D.It makes people feel good.

Spend moment thinking about a test you have to take. Do you have any of these feelings? If so, that might mean you're having some trouble dealing with the stress of the test.

Now that we know what stress feels like, let's talk about where test stress comes from. Here are a few of the biggest causes of test stress:

●Pressure from yourself. It's important to do your best and study hard, but if you feel like you just can't stop pushing yourself to prepare or you won't be happy with anything but a high grade, that pressure can't be hard to deal with.

●Pressure from parents and teachers. Most parents want to see great report cards, and they can start pushing when test time comes around. For teachers, many schools want to show high test grades from their students. So they have high expectations for the teachers, then the teachers have expectations for the students!
