閱讀理解

Ted, my little brother, is in Grade One. Last Friday he came back from school with a letter. The letter was from his teacher. “I got a red flower today. Could you please sign this note?” he said to mum. The note showed that he had been talking in class.

Ted hardly gets top scores in his school work. The best he gets is “OK”, but he often gets “You can do better than this.” Mum knows what it means. She tells me “You can do better than this” means “Extremely bad” in China.

In the USA, teachers never say anything too bad about their students, even if the students are making trouble in class or not working hard enough. The worst they might say is “Please be nicer tomorrow”. Many parents are satisfied with a B-grade for each subject.

But things in Chinese schools are quite different. Parents have high expectations for their children. I sometimes felt that my second-grade cousin spend more time on homework than I did when I was 6th grade in the US! Yet his parents and teachers didn’t think he worked hard enough.

Is it too strict in China? Or is it not strict enough in the USA? Maybe both are true.

1.Why did Ted come home with a letter last Friday?

A. Because the teacher wanted to visit his mother.

B. Because he did something wrong.

C. Because the teacher was happy with his progress.

D. Because the teacher thought he was too lazy.

2.If a student in the USA gets “OK” in his schoolwork, it means ________.

A. he gets top scores

B. he gets medium scores

C. he gets extremely bad scores

D. he gets the worst scores

3.American parents will be ________ when their children get a B-grade in their school.

A. excited B. sad C. angry D. happy

4.The underlined words “high expectations” in this passage means “________”.

A. 很高的待遇 B. 很多的自由 C. 很高的期望 D. 很多的關(guān)愛

5.The writer mainly wants to tell us ________.

A. the differences between Chinese education and American education

閱讀與回答問題。

請(qǐng)認(rèn)真閱讀下面短文,并根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容回答問題。

April Fools’ Day is celebrated in many countries around the world. In France, it’s called “Fish of April.” In Scotland, the holiday is often called “Gowkie Day.” In Iraq, the holiday is called “April Lie.”

People have celebrated April Fools’ Day for a long time. Some believe the tradition comes from the ancient Romans more than two thousand years ago. It was a day of playing games and pretending to be someone else.

Others say the day for fooling began in France in 1564, when King Charles changed the yearly calendar. He moved New Year’s Day from April 1st to January 1st. Many people did not know about the change because of communication problems back then. Some people continued to celebrate New Year’s Day on April 1st. Other people called them April Fools and played jokes on them.

In the United States, April Fools’ Day is just a day of joking and playing tricks on friends. These kinds of jokes are also called pranks. These jokes usually end in the shouting “April Fools!”

Simple pranks, like telling a friend a funny lie or making prank phone calls, are still common. But, major companies also get in on April Fools’ Day fun in a much bigger way. A few years ago, on April 1st, Starbucks announced it was introducing new coffee cup sizes—Plenta and Micra. The very large cups, bigger than a human head, remained useful for customers even after finishing all that coffee. According to Starbucks, the cups could be used as a rain hat, a pot for plants, or a lampshade (燈罩).

More and more, people use smart phone apps to play pranks on their friends on April Fools’ Day. One smart phone app, Cat Facts, sends funny facts about cats to your friends’ phones, every day.

Do you have any ideas for April Fools’ Day pranks? Have your friends played pranks on you before? Tell us about one in the comments (評(píng)論) section!
