Modern zoos are different from old zoos of fifty years ago. In old zoos people could see animals from many parts of the world. The animals lived in cages. The zoo keepers(飼養(yǎng)員) took good care of them, but many of the animals did not feel well, and they often fell ill.

In modern zoos, people can see animals in more natural conditions(自然條件). The animals are free in larger places. Trees and grass grow in cages and water runs through the places. There is often a deep pool filled with water in it. In an American zoo, visitors can see some small animals and many birds when they walk through a big special cage, and it is large enough for the birds to live naturally.

Modern zoos not only show animals to visitors, but also keep and save rare(稀罕的) animals. For this reason, people in the future will still be able to enjoy watching these animals.

The world is not only hungry, but it is also thirsty for water. This may seem strange to you, since nearly
70% of the earth's surface is covered with water. But about 97% of that is sea water, or salt water. Man can
only drink and use the other 3%-fresh water from rivers, lakes, underground, and other sources (資源).
