A well—made film offers a whole world of things to watch. First there are the story aspects, the plot, c1 , dialogue and themes. Then there are the technical aspects —the camera work, cuttings and special effects. And there are many other things, 12the credits, musical score and the acting. A well—made film o3much more than you see in one viewing. Films are a means of communication. They can tell you things, just as newspapers do, or, television, or any other means of communication. Sometimes they communicate important things to you, like ideas or lifestyles or w4of looking at the world. Sometimes people are aware of this, and sometimes not. The more you are aware of this, the b5you are. Notice, for example, the way films sometimes affect fashion. A star dresses or wears her hair in a certain way, and s6everyone is imitating her. Films can also teach politics. In Star Wars, the heroes were a bunch of lovable incompetents fighting with guts(膽量)and not much else. The whole film,in fact,t7values like faith and love of liberty. This is all to the good, but the point is,did you notice it

Not all memories are sweet. Some people spend all their lives trying to forget bad experiences. Different accidents can leave people with terrible wounds both in body and mind. Often they recall these experiences in their awful dreams.

Now American researchers think they are close to developing a kind of medicine, which will help people forget bad memories. The medicine is designed to be taken soon after a scary experience. They hope it might cut down, or possibly clean up, the effect ( ) of painful memories. In November, experts tested a drug on people in the US and France. The drug stops the body releasing chemicals(釋放化學(xué)物質(zhì))that make memories remain in the brain. So far the research has suggested that only the effects of memories in mind may be cut down, not that the memories are cleaned up.

The research has caused a great deal of argument. Some think it is a bad idea, while others support it.

Supporters say it could lead to a kind of medicine that prevent or treat soldiers’ troubling memories after war. They say that there are many people who suffer from terrible memories.

“Some memories can destroy people’s lives. They come back to you when you don’t want to have them in a daydream or awful dreams at night. They usually come with very painful feelings,” said Roger Pitman, a professor at Harvard Medical School. “This could cut down lots of that suffering.”

But those who are against the research say changing memories is very dangerous because memories make us different from others. They also help us all avoid the mistakes of the past.

“All of us can think of bad events in our lives that were terrible at the time but make us who we are. I’m not sure if I want to forget those feelings.” said Rebecca Dresser, a medical scientist.

【題目】

Hey, I'll tell you a bad-news story. My name is Arthur Hankins. The first eight years of my life were perfect-until my parents told me some terrible news.

Let me tell you about a typical perfect day. Every morning my mom wakes me up. When I go downstairs, the unmistakable smell reaches my nose, making my mouth water. Dad makes these really delicious animal-shaped pancakes. During the drive to school, we sing along loudly to my favorite music. After school, Dad and I play football around until it's time for dinner. Then we eat and tell each other stories about our day.

Well, it's about time I tell you about the bad news. It's awful. My life will never be the same. A few months ago, my parents told me that soon I'm going to have a little sister. Ugh!

Now can you see why I'm so upset? This is going to ruin everything! For eight years, I have been the focus of my family. My friend Jeff got a baby sister last year. His dad and mom never have time to play with him anymore. They are always busy feeding the baby.

The most terrible thing is that my bedroom won't be mine anymore. My baby sister will share it with me.

I told Mom that I don't want a baby sister. But it didn't work. My parents believed that____________________. Today Mom and Dad are coming home from the hospital with my new sister. I will just tell them to return her again.

Well, here they are. Dad is carrying a pink blanket. Is the baby inside there? Before I say anything, Dad is putting the baby in my arms. And then the most amazing thing happens. My baby sister grabs my finger, and she won't let it go! I think she realizes that I am her big brother, and she likes me already. Maybe having a little sister won't be so bad.

1Was Arthur happy with his life before his parents told him the news?

2Who makes breakfast for Arthur every morning?

3What was the news for Arthur?
