In ancient languages, the seven days of the week were named after the sun, the moon, and the five planets that ancient people knew about (luckily, they only knew about five planets then, or our weeks would be much longer). There is a good reason that in English “Sunday” has the word “sun” in it. Sunday seems to be everyone’s favorite day of the week. It makes sense that it’s named after everyone’s favorite thing in the sky! Do any other weekday names sound like astrological (占星的) words? How about “Monday” and “Moon”, or “Saturday” and “Saturn”?
If you learn French or Spanish, you will see even more planets in the names of the days of the week. These languages are rooted in Latin(拉丁文) and the Latin names match the planet names for all seven days.
English is a strange language. It is very confusing. The days of the week are a perfect example of this confusion. A few are from Latin, and a few are from German. “Tuesday” is named after a German God: Tiw (Tiw’s day). Friday is named after a German Goddess(女神): Freya. English words change spelling, meaning and roots that are based on wars and kings. That’s why English is so hard to learn! Learning the names of the week can be like a history lesson in itself!
