Don’t be too surprised if you see a car going down the road without a driver in Beijing these days. It might be one of Baidu’s self-driving cars.

Self-driving cars have been in development since 2010, when Google announced that it was making such cars. Since then, companies like Tesla, Uber and Baidu have been working to produce and test their own self-driving cars.

Self-driving cars are expected to change the way we get around. They are safer and more environmentally friendly than usual cars. They can remove the stress of driving and allow disabled or blind people to get around more easily.

But self-driving cars have their own flaws (缺陷)as well. In one test, researchers pointed a laser pointer (激光棒)at the car’s sensors (傳感器)while it was moving. The car mistakenly thought that the laser beam(激光束)was in its way and slowed down or changed direction. Flaws like this could be used by people to trick self-driving cars.

The software (軟件)that is used to direct the cars may not be safe enough. It may crash (崩潰),When we use our computers or smart phones, they sometimes crash without any reason. But if this happened to a self-driving car, the results could be deadly. Improvements to the software could be a way to deal with this problem.

Anyway, whether you like it or not, it’s only a matter of time before they’ll become more affordable and popular on our roads.

Answerthequestions

My____________

"The atlas(地圖冊(cè))I grew up with was a hand﹣me﹣down from my brother, dog﹣eared Collins World Atlas. This became my favourite book, and I was touched that he thought I was grown﹣up enough to appreciate it. After wars, my atlas was considered incorrect and out of date and I had to buy a new one for school. But I still missed the well﹣used pages and old﹣book smell. I carefully tore (撕)pages out of my old atlas, and glued them on cardboard. My father helped me to cut them into jigsaw puzzles as gifts for my friends. Google search is an easy way to find various places, but I still prefer to search for exotic places in a real﹣turning atlas. One day it may be priceless!"

"When I was 13, I wanted a horse of my own. Finally my parents softened to the idea and bought me a beautiful part﹣Arabian horse. To settle on a name, my father suggested I open our atlas to the page on Saudi Arabia, close my eyes and place my finger randomly(隨機(jī)地)on the page. Bandar Shah(Royal Port)was a wonderful horse."

Melanie Egan

"When I retired after 20 years with the same boss Reader's Digest, I did not expect to be given a gold watch. I certainly did not expect to be given a Reader's Digest Atlas of the World. But that is exactly what my co﹣workers decided I needed. For the next 15 years that atlas was used by my family to settle geographic arguments and plan trips abroad. Sadly, wear and tear forced its retirement, too."
