【題目】 What is the worst disease in the world? Many people might say it is cancer. Cancer will kill about 9.6 million people in the world this year, according to World Health Organization. Scientists have been working to find ways to beat cancer. A lot of progress has been made in this field.

James P Allison from the US and Japanese researcher Tasuku Honjo discovered a new kind of cancer treatment that earned them the 2018 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in October. The new treatment can make our immune systems (免疫系統(tǒng)) strong enough to effectively fight cancer cells. It is hoped that this treatment can be used to treat more cancers in the future.

This is not the only recent improvement in cancer treatment. In November, the US Food and Drug Administration approved(批準(zhǔn))a new cancer drug called Vitrakvi. Instead of being effective only for treating specific types of cancer, this drug can be used to treat 17 different kinds of cancer, including lung cancer and breast cancer, USA Today reported.

Finding cancer as early as possible is the best way to beat it. To check people for cancer, doctors must collect tissue(組織)from a patient’s tumor(腫瘤 and test it. This process can take a long time. But in December, scientists from the University of Queensland in Australia developed a simple cancer test that can detect (檢測) cancer in a patient’s blood. The test takes less than 10 minutes. The test is about 90 percent accurate (精確的), the Guardian reported.

With all of these treatments, cancer can be effectively controlled. Honjo believes most kinds of cancer will become treatable by 2050. “Even if we cannot completely eliminate(消除) the tumor, we can survive while still having part of a tumor,” Honjo said at a press conference in Stockholm, Sweden, in December.

A.It can make the immune system weak.

B.It is a new drug that can treat 17 kinds of cancer.

C.It can’t be used to treat lung cancer or breast cancer.

D.It can be used for treating all types of cancer.

3According to Paragraph 4, why is this new simple cancer test important?

A.Because it tests a patient’s blood instead of tissue.

B.Because patients can do it on their own.

C.Because it shortens the time it takes to detect cancer.

D.Because it is more accurate than traditional tests.

4According to the story, future cancer patients can feel more______.

A.hopefulB.scaredC.disappointedD.worried

【題目】 My name is Wu Zhou. I have lived in Canada for twenty-three years. In Canada, I call myself Joe Wu. Joe is an English name that sounds like Zhou.

Though I have lived here for a long time, I still don’t feel Canadian. This is probably because there are so many differences between Chinese manners and North American ones.

In China, if someone says that your English is excellent, you should be modest(謙虛的) and say, Oh, no. My English is still poor. But in North America, this is usually a sign of being weak and not confident. People just say, Thank you.

In Canada, people only ask children about their ages. It’s not polite to ask about an adult’s age. They think it is private. But in China this is common in many places.

In China, it is polite to offer an elderly person a seat on the bus. In North America, however, an elderly person may feel embarrassed(不好意思的) about being offered a seat.

When Chinese people eat out in restaurants, they may take turns to pay for the meal. In Canada, however, people often share the cost of a meal.

In China, if there is no food left on guests’ plates, it’s polite to put food on them. In Canada, people pass food to guests, but seldom put food on their plates.

In China, guests seldom give money to waiters, waitresses, taxi drivers or hotel workers to show thanks. In North America, this is always done. It is called “tipping”.

It’s interesting to experience two different cultures. I think understanding cultural differences really helps us to understand each other, live together and work together.

【題目】Jerry: Hello, will you tell me something about Tae Kwon Do?

Kim: Yes, of course. You know it is one of the martial arts(武術(shù)) of Asia. Tae Kwon Do comes from ancient Korea, but is now popular all over the world. There are different types, but the important thing is that the leg, not the arm, is used most for fighting. The leg is the strongest and longest part of the body and, if you use it carefully, you can defeat(打敗) your enemy. Of course, we use the leg to kick. There are three kicks we use. There is a fourth, but it can kill people and is not used in the sport.

Jerry: Do you know that kick?

Kim: No, only a few champions(冠軍) with great skill learn it.

Jerry: Tell me about the belts(腰帶).

Kim: Yes, beginners have white belts to show they know nothing. Then you move through a number of colors. Different schools of Tae Kwon Do are different. My school has ten colors. The top level is black. And there are nine types of black belts. The very top are the Grand Masters. I will never be one of those!

Jerry: How many Grand Masters are there?

Kim: I think there are twenty. I will give you my Tae Kwon Do Yearbook. The different belts are described there and there is a list of Grand Masters.

Jerry: Who can enjoy Tae Kwon Do?

Kim: In the past, Tae Kwon Do was for men, but now it is for boys and girls. If you are strong, want a chance for exercise and enjoy skill, it is a good sport for you. I think it attracts serious people as you need discipline(訓(xùn)練;紀(jì)律) and a lot of thoughts. It is not like football, running around, shouting and having fun.

Jerry: What happens in a match?

Kim: Two people fight. They must follow rules. If you touch the right part of the other persons body, you get a point. You lose points if you break any rules. There are three two-minute fights in each match.

Jerry: This is all very interesting. I think my project will be good.
