1

之間”可用between表示,此處構(gòu)成“between…and…” 故填between。

4

故填to eat/eating。

9

故填Though/Although。

Imagine this. There's an apple and a piece of cake on a table. Which one would you like? The delicious cake or the healthy apple? A bestseller, Willpower: Rediscovering Our Greatest Strength, suggests that willpower(意志力)is the ability to make decisions that are better for us in the long term, rather than in the short term.

Here is a famous experiment in the book: The Marshmallow Test. In 1972, Professor Walter Mischel tested the willpower of 600 four-year-olds to six-year-olds. In the experiment, each child was left alone in a room for fifteen minutes with a marshmallow(棉花軟糖)on a table in front of them. They were given two choices: they could either eat it or, if they waited fifteen minutes, they'd be given a second one(and then they could eat both).

So, what did the kids do? Well, as you can imagine, 70% ate the first marshmallow within the fifteen minutes. But the other 30% showed willpower—they controlled themselves and waited for the second marshmallow. But then Mischel discovered something really interesting. Twenty years later, he got in touch with the children, who, by then, were in their early twenties. And he found that those who'd shown strong willpower were getting better marks at university and were more popular.

Willpower is like a muscle(肌肉), and the more you exercise it, the stronger it gets.

So, if you do daily "self-control exercises", such as making your bed or brushing your teeth, you'll improve your overall willpower. And daily willpower exercises will help you with those bigger goals, such as studying for an exam or training for a marathon.

Be careful though. Just like any muscle, your "willpower muscle" can get tired. If you've had to do lots of things that require willpower, take a break or give yourself a treat.

That way, you’ll build up your willpower again.

And one last thing, the writer mentions people who learn foreign languages usually have a lot of willpower. So, congratulations!

How much does it cost to have my shoes shined?” A man in black stood in front of me and asked. Before I could answer, I had started brushing away on his shoes.

“How much do you make a week, boy?” he asked me again. I knew he was laughing at me. All the time I was wondering where I had seen the man. Suddenly I knew I had seen his picture in the post office many times. He was a big swindler—one who cheated money out of others, wanted by the police in many states.

“You know,” he was saying, “it’s imagination people lack. You’ll never get anywhere as a shoeshine boy. Along with imagination, it takes courage. The courage to take a chance. When I was sixteen, I had made $2,500 of my own,” he kept talking away.

That’s when something reminded me. Was it $2,500 or $5,000 or $25,000? I wasn’t sure. I knew a big reward was offered for him.

But what could I do about it? Hit him with a can of shoe polish? A man his size could put me under his power easily.

Suddenly I saw Officer Dailey coming across street. Then, very fast, I began to tie the man’s shoelaces together. The man was watching the officer. “That’s enough, boy!” he said, “I got to be going.”

The policeman was at the window when I shouted, “Officer Dailey, help! This man is a cheat.”

“Shut up,” the man said angrily. I saw a gun in his hand. He was starting to run away when he fell on his face and knocked himself out.

There was a reward of $7,500 for the man,” the officer said. “That’s clever of you.”

“Well, it really wasn’t my idea,” I said. “It was his …

Fights at school sometimes happen. But how can you keep away from a fight? Here’s something you can do.

Be calm(冷靜).Sometimes, you feel so angry that you really want to teach somebody a lesson. But being angry can’t solve problems. Neither can a fight. Instead, it may bring you more problems. In the school, everyone involved(卷入)in a fight will be punished, no matter who started it. There are no winners in a fight.

Shout loudly. If you know someone is coming up behind you to attack, turn toward the person with your hands up in front of your body and loudly say “stop” before walking away. Loud voice can usually make the attacker calm down. If the person doesn’t stop, cry for help by calling out the name of a teacher whose office is nearby.

________.Your friend may ask you to join in a fight. Learn to say no. Helping him fight is not really helpful to him. If you really want to give him a hand, try to ask him to give it up.
