Do Ho Suh is an artist. He was born in South Korea in Asia. His new exhibition is about home and how people feel about it. It is called "Almost Home." The inspiration for his series of homes camefrom when he moved to New York after college. You can see it at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. The museum is in Washington, D.C.
The exhibition has three houses. Each is made of colored fabric (織物). They are connected. Suhcalls them hubs. Visitors are able to walk through them. Each hub shows one of Suh's homes. Theblue hub is his home in South Korea. He lived there as a child. The pink hub is his apartment inNew York City. The green hub is his home in Berlin, Germany. For Suh, blue means sadness. Hesaid he felt sad when he lived in Seoul. The hubs are connected together. They are sewn (縫) in theold Korean way. Suh calls them "suitcase homes." They do not weigh much. This way they can bemoved from museum to museum. With the suitcase homes, Suh can carry his home with him. Hesaid he is like a snail. The snail carries its home on its back. He feels all his homes carry his oldmemories.
Immigrants are people who move from one country to another. Suh is also an immigrant. In a way,we are all immigrants. We all move from place to place.
Suh wondered how other people feel about home. For some people, it is just a place. For others, itis a feeling. His art has a purpose. It shows how he felt moving from country to country. In someplaces, he felt good. He felt protected, comfortable and free. In other places, he felt like a stranger,Suh said.
Maybe you still live in your first home. Still, Suh's exhibition will make you think about your feelings about it. Sometimes your memories of these details can be a home worth visiting.
