An east China highway pile-up on April 2nd has killed three people and injured 31 others. That day was the first day of a three-day national holiday marking the Tomb-Sweeping Day.

Two people died in a local hospital where nine others are being treated. Another person died after treatment failed in a larger hospital in Wuxi where 22 remain hospitalized, Changzhou traffic police updated on its official microblog account at Weibo.com.

The accident happened at the Changzhou section of the highway linking Shanghai and Nanjing. It drew public attention as people began posting photos and videos on Chinese social media WeChat and Weibo. Images showed dozens of trucks, buses and cars crashed into each other. People were standing on top of the vehicles.

Local police told Xinhua Press that at least two trucks, three buses and 20 cars were involved. Rainy and foggy weather caused poor visibility and slippery roads.

What’s more, it was difficult for ambulances (救護(hù)車(chē))to get to the scene of the accident because the life emergency lane was filled with vehicles, which delayed the rescue of the injured.

The Ministry (部長(zhǎng)) of Public Security told traffic departments nationwide to keep a look out for vehicles using the emergency lane occupancy.

All highways in China leave the right lane as the emergency lane. Some drivers, however, pay no attention to this rule. Therefore, the police call on drivers to follow the rule strictly and offer the injured more hope of being saved.

The ministry also asked the police to watch the traffic more carefully so as to quickly discover the potential (潛在的) danger. The police have decided to add electronic monitoring instruments to catch the violations (違規(guī)者) and heavily fine drivers for it.

I live in a town. In the past, the air wasn’t fresh. There was a river. People put rubbish in it. The water went bad. The fishes in the river died. There was much rubbish in the streets which weren’t wide. It smelt terrible. People lived in low old houses with trees all around and had a terrible life. The children couldn’t have many chances to go out to cities, not to say, have a good education. Farmers worked only with their hands. They worked very hard all year round. They planted crops(農(nóng)作物)with the help of animals. The poor people went anywhere on foot, and only some rode bikes. Few visitors came here to spend their holidays.

At present, things have been greatly changed. People have moved into big bright houses or beautiful buildings. There is a big factory. Many people work in it. They are getting richer. Different kinds of cars and buses are running in the big streets. It is faster and easier to travel. People plant many fruit trees and get much money. People plant crops with the help of machines which can save lots of work. Students can study in a modem school. People pay more attention to the environmental protection. The mountains are becoming greener, water much cleaner. What around us is the clearer sky and greener water. As a result, many visitors come here to spend their holidays. People enjoy their modern life. But with the development of the industry, we have fewer trees. Air and water pollution is becoming more and more serious.
