A Different Roast Every Day

　　Alan used to spend his holiday by the seaside , but one day he saw an ad.(廣告) in a newspaper. It said “Enjoy country life. Spend a few weeks at Willow Farm. Good food, fresh air, horse-riding, walking, fishing . Good prices .”

　　“This sounds like a good idea, ” he thought . Because he had been working very hard and really wanted to take a holiday. “I'll spend a month at Willow Farm. I'll enjoy horse riding, walking and fishing. They will make a change from sitting by the seaside . ”

　　Four days later, he returned home . “What's wrong with the Farm?” his friend Jack asked him. “Didn't you enjoy country life?”

　　“Country life was fine,” Alan said,“but there was another problem . ”

　　“What?”

　　“Well, the first day I was there. A sheep died, and we had roast mutton (羊肉)for dinner.”

　　“Fresh meat is the best.”

　　“I know, but on the second day a cow died, and we had roast beef for diner.”

　　“Lucky you !”

　　“You don't understand ,” Alan said . “on the third day a pig died and we had roast pork for dinner.”

　　“A different roast every day, ” Jack said .

　　“Let me finish,” Alan said, “on the fourth day, the farmer died and I did not dare to stay for dinner. ”

　　Every night the stars seem to move slowly round the sky in a great circle(圓周)．But one star is dif-ferent from others．It looks as if it never moved．To us, it is always in exactly the same place all thetime．It is called the Pole Star(北極星)．It is not a very bright star, but it is very important．Sailors use the Pole Star to find out where they are moving to．

　　A star is really a great ball of burning gas(燃燒的氣體)，like the sun．Some stars are much bigger than the sun, But they are all so far away from us that they just look like dots(圓點(diǎn))of light．

　　On the clearest night you can count about 2 000 stars．This may seem a lot, but with a telescope you can see many more．The better the telescope, the more stars you can see．Scientists tell us there are millions and millions of stars．No one know exactly how many there are．
