VIII. Read the article carefully and answer the questions.

We all have our own ways of sharing our life experiences with others. Photographers use cameras, artists use brushes, musicians use songs and writers use stories. Spencer Johnson’s story Who Moved My Cheese? shows changes exist in(存在于) our life. Life changes and so we do. We must change ourselves to face the changing environment, or we will fail.

Just look at the cycle of the seasons. Trees bud(發(fā)芽) in spring and in summer their leaves turn green. In autumn, their leaves start to fall onto the ground. When winter arrives, there are no leaves on trees. Next spring the cycle begins again. Since we know there are cycles in nature, we can prepare for them. We know it is colder in winter and hotter in summer, so we can dress properly.

Since we accept the cycles of nature, we should also accept the changes in our life. We can prepare ourselves for changes by becoming more flexible(靈活的). We can regard the changes in our life as chances. As we keep changing ourselves, we can keep up with the changes in our life. So we should change ourselves when life changes.

Agatha Christie is possibly the world’s most famous detective(偵探的) story writer. She wrote about 80 novels, and her sales (4 billion copies of her novels) was over those of William Shakespeare. However, behind her works was a shy woman whose life was often lonely and unhappy.

She was born in 1890 in Devon, the third child of Clarissa and Frederick Miller, and grew into a beautiful and sensitive(敏感的) girl. She didn’t go to school but was educated by her parents. Her father taught her maths through stories and games, and her mother encouraged her to write by her own stories. Unfortunately her father died in 1901 when she was 11, and both she and her mother were very sad.

When World War I came in 1914, she became a nurse in a hospital, which was very useful to her later work. Many of the murders(殺人犯) in her books were carried out by a clever use of medicine, showing how much she had learnt about them as a nurse.

She wrote her first detective novel, The Mysterious Affair at Styles, in 1916. And it was published in 1920. In this novel she introduced Hercule Poirot, the Belgian detective who appeared in many later novels. Her other main detective was Miss Marple, who was from Agatha’s grandmother and her circle of friends. Christie’s stories keep the reader guessing who the murderer is until the very end of the story.

In 1914, at the beginning of the war, she married Archibald Christie, but the marriage was unhappy. It didn’t last and they left each other in 1926. It was a very difficult time for her, as her much-loved mother had died earlier that year. Agatha suffered a lot and one night she drove her car and disappeared.

She went missing for eleven days and was finally found in a hotel in Harrogate, in the North of England. Agatha only wanted staying alone but the newspapers had given her a hard time over her driving the car and disappearing. She decided never to let them enter her private life again

She enjoyed a very happy second marriage to Max Mallowan who she met in Baghdad and married in 1930. Her detective skills were a help to him in his work in Syria and Iraq. By successfully staying out of the newspapers, she found happiness with her husband. Her best novels were written after 1930, and she continued writing until 1973. She died peacefully in 1976.

We are excited when we reach our goals, and at that moment we laugh, clap, even are over the moon. Without doubt, good results make us joyful. However, we can not always get what we want and be the winner all the time. Some people can’t help doubting, “ Are our efforts in vain?”

The answer is “No”. We should remember that we are not only measured by how many goals we’ve reached, but also by how we’ve acted, which means the process(過(guò)程)is also important.

Here is an example. Fruit is delicious. It takes trees a long time to bear it. In the process of growing, trees have to suffer from bad weather, insect bites and also intentional destruction(故意破壞) from human beings. So it is with us. Our life is like a journey. At the beginning, we set a destination(目標(biāo)), dreaming of it every night, but we should never forget that we spend most of our time on the journey. Unfortunately, many people only complain about the failure and then give up hope. In fact, it is failure that teaches us to be brave and stand on our own feet.

I myself deeply believe that only those who have experienced a lot can own the highly-valued character; only those who have taken a lot of adventures can have the chance to succeed. As the saying goes, “No pains, no gains.” We are still young, still full of energy, so why are we afraid of failure and why do we hesitate(猶豫)to take an adventure?

Young men, let’s forget results, leave out pains, and just look forward and don’t miss any chance on the journey!

1.Reaching our goals will make us ________.

A. laugh at others B. be over the moon C. asset another goal D. forget our efforts

2.What does the underlined phrase “in vain” mean in Chinese?

A. 值得 B. 益處 C. 高效 D. 徒勞

3.The writer gives an example of fruit in order to say _________.

A. fruit is delicious B. people can also suffer a lot in life

C. it’s hard for a tree to bear fruit D. we should grow trees to get good fruit

4.Only those who__________ will get the good character.

A. have gone through a lot B. work very hard

C. believe that things will be better and better D. believe in themselves

5.What’s the best title for this passage ?

A. Stand on Our Own Feet B. Process Is Also Important

C. Don’t Doubt Yourself D. Failure Is the Mother Of Success
