Kids Who Are Changing the World by Anne Jankeliowitch, France

Can only scientists and great people change the world? Of course not. As a young adult you can also make a difference. Kids Who Are Changing the World finds 45 of these kids and young adults. For example, Felix Finkbeiner is a 15-year-old boy from Germany. At the age of 9, he started a website to tell kids that planting trees can reduce greenhouse gases. Other kids in the book have recycled computers and raised money for clean drinking water. They share their success and what role their parents played in their story. A few also tell us their biggest mistakes and how they learned from them. Who may inspire you most?

All Creatures Great and Small by James Herriot, UK

For people living in big cities, a busy lifestyle can easily make them forget small beauties and touching moments. But James Herriot wants us to remember them and fully enjoy them. In the book, he tells us his experience as a vet in the English countryside. Some of his experiences are fun, such as when he welcomed the birth of little lambs (羊羔). Some are heartbreaking, such as when he saw the death of a very sick dog that was the only friend of an old man, although he tried his best to save it. Herriot shows us the wonderful relationship between man and animals with his loving eyes.

On March 14, one of science’s brightest stars went dark. Stephen Hawking, the world-famous British scientist, died at 76 in Cambridge, UK.

Hawking is considered by many to be the greatest scientist in history since Albert Einstein. He educated the world with his knowledge that the universe (宇宙) began with the Big Bang (大爆炸) and will end in black holes. His studies are of great help for later researches. He also wrote books to help common people understand the universe. His most famous book is A Brief History of Time, which has sold more than 10 million copies around the world, according to CNN.

Besides his scientific achievements, Hawking was also someone who had a strong mind and bravely smiled in face of difficulty.

When Hawking was 21, he developed a serious illness that stopped him from walking and talking. Later in life, he had to sit in a wheelchair and “speak” by using a computerized voice. But THIS didn’t stop him from living a meaningful and colorful life. “If one is physically disabled, he cannot afford to be disabled in mind as well,” he once said.

Hawking traveled the world to attend different science meetings, visiting many places, including Antarctica (南極洲). He was also a fan of pop culture and appeared on TV shows such as Star Trek and The Big Bang Theory.

He celebrated his 60th birthday by going up in a hot-air balloon; when he was 65, he took part in a special flight to experience weightlessness just like in space. He hoped to travel into space one day.

“At first, I felt it was very unfair — why should this happen to me,” Hawking wrote in his book. “But now, 50 years later, I can be quietly pleased with my life.” Now, the great scientist may no longer be with us, but he will continue to live in our hearts now and in the future. As he once said himself, “Look up at the stars and not down at your feet.”
