First Impressions

The day that I met my best friend for the first time, I was full of anxiety (焦慮). I was trying to do some revision for an important oral exam in the local library and people kept disturbing(打擾)me. I was getting more and more annoyed(煩惱的)and of course, the more upset I got, the less I was able to concentrate(全神貫注). I couldn't stand when I heard someone singing behind me. I turned around and looked at the person who was singing angrily. It was a tall girl about the same age as me and she had a big smile on her face. She was standing with a book of Tennyson’s poems in her hands. She seemed very interested in what she was reading.

I picked up my books, looked at her and said angrily, " Thanks to your noise, I've been unable to study. You're so selfish! "

Because I left the library in such a hurry, I left my most important textbook behind. When I realized I'd forgotten it and there was nothing I could do as the library was closed, I was so upset that I almost cried. Just then, the phone rang. I answered it and a gentle voice introduced she was Jenny and asked if I was Jane. After confirming(證實)that I was, Jenny said that she had noticed I'd left my textbook in the library and as my name was in it, she'd asked a librarian to get my phone number. She said that she didn't live far away and could bring it around for me if I needed it.

I agreed to meet her at the convenience store down the road. I was so grateful! When I recognized Jenny was the girl I had shouted at for singing, I was filled with shame and apologized several times for my rude behavior. Jenny just laughed and told me she was glad to see that I'd also left my glare(怒視)in the library! I couldn't help laughing at this and I invited her back to my apartment for a quick cup of tea.

We got along really well and ever since then we've been best friends. We've very much alike and we tell each other everything. I thought how lucky I was. If Jenny hadn't been a kind person who was willing to forgive my shortcomings, I would never have experienced such true friendship.

We desire to believe that we can get fit without effort. We invent chocolate-chip cookie diets to make us thin while eating fat. We wish to get fit from doing nothing. We wish to lie in bed, think about going to the gym and then, get the body of a Greek god.

A new study from Brian Clark at Ohio University shows that sitting still, while just thinking about exercise, might make us stronger. Clark and his colleagues asked 29 volunteers and wrapped their wrists in surgical casts for a whole month. During this month, half of the volunteers thought about exercising their immobilized (使不動)wrists. For 11 minutes a day, 5 days a week, they sat completely still and focused their entire mental effort on pretending to flex their muscles. When the casts were removed, the volunteers that did mental exercises had wrist muscles that were two times stronger than those who had done nothing at all.

The idea behind the research is not a new concept-just a concept that’s often neglected in the field of neuroscience(神經(jīng)科學(xué)): our bodies and our brains develop together. Even though we treat our mind and bodies as two separate things(brain vs brawn; mind vs matter), they are finally and closely connected.

Indeed, even before Brian Clark published his study, other researchers had explained links between the brain and the muscles. Ten years ago, Guang Yue at the Cleveland Clinic reported that imaginary exercise increases the strength of finger muscles by up to 35%. Just five years ago, Kai Miller at the University of Washington, showed that imaginary exercise activates the same brain areas that are activated during real exercise. Brain Clark's research adds to this body of knowledge and provides believable facts about the role of neuromuscular(神經(jīng)肌肉的) pathways in strength training.

1.What's the purpose of chocolate-chip cookie diets?

A.To keep strong. B.To grow thinner. C.To keep fat. D.To have muscles

2.The experiment proves that .

A.wrapping their wrists may be quick B.showing their muscles needs efforts

C.sitting still might make us stronger D.thinking about exercise is so useful

3.Which of the following concepts is often neglected according to the passage?

A.Our mind and bodies are two separate things B.Our bodies and brains develop together

C.Our mind has a close relation to bodies D.Our mind has little effect on our brains

4.What's the best title for the passage?

A.How to grow stronger without lifting weights. B.How to carry out a muscle exercise program.

C.How to prevent muscle from growing thinner. D.How to provide pathways in strength training,

Misadventure in English

Last week, our forum ( 論 壇 ) asked if you had any funny or strange stories about using English. Here are some of our favourite posts.

Sophie

When I first visited New York, I went to a shopping centre. I asked a lady where the shoes were. She said they were on the first floor. I went upstairs. But I couldn’t find any. I thought she gave me the wrong information. Then, I realized that the first floor was the ground floor.

128

Yancy

I went to a summer school in Manchester. One day, the head master told us that our English teacher Maggie couldn’t teach that day because she had a frog in her throat. Why did she eat a frog? Then I learned that it means someone’s throat is dry or blocked. How funny!

135

Julien

My British penfriend once told me that his grandfather was “wicked (邪惡的)”. But when I met his grandfather, I liked him a lot. I found it very strange. Why did my friend use a bad word about such a nice man? Guess what? When speaking informally, “wicked” means “very nice”.

70

Zheng Xu

I was part of a student exchange programme between a school in England and one in China. I knew I had done a good job writing my first English paper. But my teacher gave me “Not bad!” Not bad? There weren’t any mistakes! Actually, British people use “not bad” when things are pretty good! I got a good comment!

You must think a computer is the best thing in the world, right? You must think it works at a super speed and can do everything? Well, it’s not! In fact, the brain is much more powerful than any super computer! Think about when a glass is just about to fall off the table. Your brain controls everything that you need to do to save that glass from falling. First your eyes check out what’s going on, then tell your brain, and your brain decides how quickly you need to react (反應(yīng)), and then your muscles (肌肉) go into action. That is just from your brain. No computer could ever come close to that!

The brain weighs just 3 pounds, but it controls everything you do from thinking, learning, feeling even to breathing and your heart beating. Even though the brain is just 2% of your body weight, it uses around 20% of all your energy in your body. That is a lot for such a small organ (器官). There are about 100 billion tiny, tiny little cells in your brain. There are so many that it would take you over 3,000 years to count them all!

Your brain stops growing when you’re 18, but it actually keeps on developing and learning new things. So your parents are really super smart! You won’t be able to fool them! Believe it or not, your brain NEVER stops working. Even during sleeping, the brain works for long-term memory establishment (建立). It is realized that the brain is the second organ in the body as the heart that never stops during human lives.

So everyone should be proud of such a gift of nature.

1.In Paragraph 1,the writer wants to tell us .

A.eyes and muscles react quickly B.the brain controls everything in your body

C.the computer is the best thing in the world D.the brain is more powerful than any computer

2.What can we know from the passage?

A.The brain doesn’t work during sleeping. B.The brain is the only organ that never stops.

C.The brain keeps growing during human lives. D.The brain keeps on developing during human lives.

3.Which word can best describe the brain according to the passage?

A.Magic. B.Quick. C.Light. D.Developing.

4.In which magazine can the passage be found most probably?

A.Business Weekly. B.Medicine. C.Science. D.Sports.

Fresh green grass. Hundreds of colorful wild flowers. Water running into little pools. Birds making their homes in boxes. The 9, 500-square-metre Augustenborg Botanical Garden may look just like any other well-organized park but there’s a difference. It lies on the roofs(屋頂) of industrial and office buildings in the city of Malmo in Sweden.

Green roofs are not a new invention. And now they are getting popular again. The common roofs of a modem city have endless black surfaces with no life or water. Perhaps that’s why a garden on a roof becomes such a perfect choice for more and more people.

Green roofs are not just pretty. They also help to moderate the city temperature. The high temperatures on common roofs in the summer can make top floor flats uncomfortably hot. What is more, they play a part in making the cities hotter than the countryside around them, causing the “urban heat-island effect”. On a green roof, however, with its plants and water, temperatures change only a little, as they do in a park. This can greatly cut the costs of heating and cooling in the building below.

Also, a green roof takes in rain water, and protects the city drainage(排水) system. ____ And small animals and birds can make their homes on it. Thanks to this, the city may become part of nature, rather than something completely separate from it.

While the cost of building such a roof can still be higher, it can be cheaper in the long term as a result of energy savings. And wouldn't it be wonderful to be able to walk out into a garden high above the city’s noise and traffic, whether you're at school or in an office or just at home in a ten-floor block.

1.With the example of Augustenborg Botanical Garden, the writer wants to explain ____.

A. how wildlife is protected B. what a green roof is like

C. how to organize a good park D. what to do with a spare roof

2.The underlined word “moderate” in Paragraph 3 is the closest in meaning to “____”.

A. raise B. check C. record D. control

3.Which of the following is the best sentence to fill in the blank in Paragraph 4?

A. A green roof is alive. B. A green roof stops pollution.

C. A common roof is noisy. D. A common roof increases the cost.

4.The purpose of the passage is to ____.

A. discover the problems with green roofs B. introduce the change of green roofs

C. show the amazing beauty of green roofs D. describe the advantages of green roofs
