Digging up the potato garden


AN old man wanted to spade (鏟) his potato garden, but it was very hard work. His only son was in prison (監(jiān)獄). The old man wrote a letter to him:

Dear Son,

I won’t be able to plant my potato garden this year.

I’m just too old. If you were here, all my troubles would be over.

Love,

Dad

Shortly, the old man received this telegram (電報(bào)):

Dad, don’t dig up (挖) the garden! I buried (埋) the guns (槍) in it!

The next morning, some policemen showed up and dug up the entire garden. But they didn’t find any guns.

The old man wrote another note to tell his son what had happened. Soon he received a telegram:

Plant your potatoes, Dad. It’s the best I could do for you from here.

Shadow puppet play(皮影戲), also called “shadow

the audience can see the puppets' shadows clearly. Then they move the puppets around and do the

voices of the different roles.

Now with TV and films, shadow puppet plays are not as popular as before. But the basic

principle(愿望) and ways of shadow performance played an important leading role in the

invention of the modern movie and the development of the movies and cartoons. Nowadays, the

Chinese shadow puppet plays have been collected by the museums of many countries in the

world. It is the treasure in the world culture and art family.
