Build a smart future

The Internet is shaping our lives. We already have online shopping services and mobile payment. However, this is just a start. The world’s leading tech companies are planning to build smarter online communities. They discussed this at the World Internet Conference, which was held in Wuzhen.

The development of artificial intelligence (AI) was a hot topic at the conference (會(huì)議). If a machine can learn and solve problems as humans do, it can be called AI.

The company Alibaba uses AI technology in its unmanned supermarket in Wuzhen. There is no salesperson in the supermarkets, just a tablet (平板電腦) on a desk that says “ please smile”. If you smile, it gives you a special discount off your foods. The bigger you smile, the more discounts for your goods. Payment is done stigmatically through your Alipay account. When you first enter the supermarket, the supermarket’s AI recognizes your face and your account.

There is also AI that can read lips. Sougou brought its lip-reading system to

the conference. It recognizes your mouth’s movements and turns them into voice or text massagers. This could be very useful when you are trying to talk to someone on your phone in a noisy place. Police could also use the technology to help them find criminal suspects (犯罪嫌疑人) by lip-reading recordings from video camera.

Another type of AI focus on understanding human emotions. Microsoft chatbox

XiaoIce can not only provide useful information but also chat with people like a real friend. XiaoIce has Wehat account. After following the account, users can start talking with her. She knows when to comfort you or tell jokes. she keeps improving herself by talking with users.

These technologies are being put into wilder use. We may see a smarter world and better life in the near future.

A few years ago, I worked at a church(教堂). Since my son was home schooling, he went with me to the church every day. Most mornings, we’d stop at a local store, and get a chocolate drink for him and a cup of coffee for me.

The clerk(店員) at the store made our lives more enjoyable each day, and so we returned again and again. She had found her own way of enjoying life and her job. I’m not even sure if she realized that her warmth and brightness put a smile upon the face of each customer(顧客).

When a customer brought cakes to the counter, any other clerk could have asked: “Would you like some milk with those cakes?” Instead, she asked: “Would you like a lottery ticket(彩票) with those cakes?”

She might have asked me if I wanted sugar with my coffee. But instead, she asked: “Would you like some batteries(電池) with that coffee?”

Yes, life is what you make of it. This clerk’s method of dealing with what some think is a boring job, and with the customers she met daily, made the hours in her day more enjoyable. In doing that, she also refreshed the lives of others and made them laugh.

Sometimes, if my day at the church had been very tiring, we’d stop at that store before going home. We’d giggle (咯咯笑) as we left the store, the clerk’s words echoing (回響) behind us.

“Would you like some shampoo (洗發(fā)香波) with that orange juice?”

Learning a language is a long and difficult process. This process can become easier if you set goals (目標(biāo)). However, if your goals are too dfficult, you will probably become upset.

Many English learners set unreasonable goals, such as sounding like a native speaker (母語使用者), or losing their accents (口音 ). The goal of sounding like a native speaker is not easy for many people.

When English learners begin studying English after a certain age, they are not able to sound exactly like a native speaker. That’s the opinion of Eli Hinkel, a professor at Seattle Pacific University. She says that people who have not reached puberty (青春期) still have enough muscle (肌肉) and brain plasticity (可塑性)to allow their brain to control their mouth muscles. After your physical growth has stopped, the brain loses some of its ability to change the way it controls the muscles of the mouth. This is what results in an accent, according to Hinkel.

Having an accent does not mean that your language skills are poor or you should give up improving your pronunciation. Hinkel suggests English learners should not be too upset about their accents.

Another teacher says sounding like a native speaker is not necessary. Marla Yoshida is a teacher at the University of California, Irvine. She says that improving your pronunciation is surely possible—if you choose a reasonable goal. Marla Yoshida says that when you decide to diet, you may succeed if you set reasonable goals. She suggests working on certain areas of pronunciation that you can improve, instead of trying to sound like a native speaker.

1.What does the underlined part“unreasonable goals”probably refer to?

A. Goals that are meaningless. B. Goals that are too small.

C. Goals that are interesting D. Goals that are impossible to reach.

2.Why are English learners unable to sound like a native speaker?

A. They have no native speakers to talk to. B. They don’t have enough time to practice.

C. Their brain can’t control their mouth muscles. D. Their mother language stops them from doing so.

3.Which of the following statements would Eli Hinkel probably agree with?

A. Having an accent is acceptable B. Improving pronunciation isn’t that important.

C. Sounding like a native speaker is impossible. D. Poor pronunciation means poor language skills.

4.What does the passage mainly want to show?

A. Learning English well isn’t as easy as we think.

B. We should try our best to sound like a native speaker

C. Everyone can learn English well if he/she tries hard.

D. We can improve our pronunciation by setting reasonable goals.
