【題目】 It is often said that elderly people don’t understand youngsters, while many believe that children are too young to fully appreciate the wisdom ( 智 慧 ) of their elders. But in truth, both groups have a lot to learn from each other.
Sister Geraldine Tan runs the St. Joseph’s Home for the Aged and Hospice in Singapore. It’s mainly a facility (機構) for serving the elderly. But not all of its visitors are senior citizens (老年人).
The home also includes a childcare center for about 50 kids between the ages of 2 months and 6 years old. At the center of the home’s courtyard (庭院), there’s a playground where the elderly can play with the kids. By doing so, they can learn more about each other and gain mutual ( 相 互 的 ) respect and understanding.
I think this is quite an interesting idea. For one thing, we live in a world where aging societies are becoming more common. China itself is facing this problem as its population ages. It will be important for young people to be able to understand and care for the elderly in the coming decades (數(shù)十年).
Sadly, my own grandparents weren’t around when I was little, as they had already passed away. I never got to learn what the world was like through their eyes, or what kinds of challenges they might have faced when they were my age. Their lives will always be a mystery to me.
But I suppose I can still learn from other people of older generations. I might find some of their ideas old-fashioned, and they might believe that my generation’s way of thinking is strange or incorrect. But we can still learn from each other anyway.

Once there was a king and his daughter. The king asked his daughter how much she loved him. She said that she loved him as much as she loved salt. Her answer made the king very happy. Salt is simple thing, but it is very important. So the king thought his daughter cared a lot about him.
Salt has many uses. Bodies need salt. If we don’t have enough, our bodies can’t work properly. We put salt on icy roads to make them safe. We also use salt to produce other products, like paper and glass. But for many years, salt’s most important job was to protect food. Like other living things, most bacteria(細菌) need water to live. Salt takes in plenty of water, so most bacteria can’t live in a salty environment. Therefore, salt protects food and many other things. For much of humans history, this ability has made salt valuable. Every ancient culture from Egypt to China depended on salt. Even today, the hard working useful people are described as “the salt of the earth”.
For centuries, salt was also hard to get because its usefulness made it very expensive. Salt could even be used like money, in fact, the word salary(薪水) comes from the word salt.
Today, salt is used more widely and it still plays an important role in our life.

【題目】閱讀下面短文,根據短文內容完成句子,每空不超過5個詞。
“We live to work or we work to live” is a very famous question. The society is moving faster and no one has the time to think about whether the way we follow is the best solution. In fact, it’s hard to solve the problem: the balance(平衡) between work and personal life.
Maybe you say you don’t want to have a personal life. You want to work all the time to devote(奉獻) yourself to your work. Before doing this, you’d better ask yourself, do you want to have a family?
The perfect example that shows the idea is Steve Jobs. He decided that no matter how rich he was or how nice it was to stay with his family, it’s more important to be creative and to bring new technologies. It’s clear that he gave up his personal life. People all over the world are thankful to him, but what about his family?
In my opinion, although work is important, we do need our personal life, such as family, friends and parties. We still need to work. And we should try our best to work well. But do remember that work is only one part of our life. Just like we need a balanced diet, we also need a balance between work and life.
【1】Everyone is too busy to ________ the question.
【2】It’s difficult to keep the balance ________.
【3】People all over the world are thankful to Steve Jobs because he ________ his personal life.
【4】According to the writer, ________ are also very important besides work.
【5】The writer thinks that work is ________ of our life.
