A friend of mine named Paul received an expensive car from his brother as a Christmas present. On Christmas Eve when Paul came out of his office, a street urchin(頑童) was walking around the shining car. “Is this your car, sir?” he asked. Paul answered, “Yes, my brother gave it to me for Christmas.” The boy was surprised. “You mean your brother gave it to you and it did cost you nothing? Sir, I wish…” He hesitated(猶豫). Paul thought of course he knew what the boy wanted, but what the boy said surprised him greatly. “I wish,” the boy went on, “that I could be a brother like that.” Paul looked at the boy in surprise, and then he said again,“Would you like to take a ride in my car?” “Oh yes, I’d love to,” the boy answered.

“There he is, Buddy, just like I told you upstairs. His brother gave it to him for Christmas and it didn’t cost him a cent. And some day I’m going to give you one just like it…then you can see for yourself all the nice things in the Christmas windows that I’ve been trying to tell you about.”

It seems that there’s a good reason why dogs are always seen as man’s best friend. Scientists have found that dogs are the only animals that can read emotion(情感)in faces much like humans. The finding suggests that like an understanding friend, dogs can see if we are happy, sad, pleased or angry.
When humans look at a new face, their eyes usually look across the left, falling on the right hand side of the person’s face first. A possible reason for this is that the right side of the human face is better at expressing emotions.
Scientists have now shown that pet dogs also have “l(fā)eft gaze bias(左視偏好)”, but only when looking at human faces. No other animal has been known to do like this before. Dr. Kun Guo showed 17 dogs pictures of human, dog and monkey faces as well as something else with his team. The dogs’ eyes and heads show a strong left gaze bias when the animals see human faces. But this did not happen when they were shown other pictures, including those of dogs.
Guo suggests that over thousands of years living with humans, dogs may have developed the left gaze bias as a way to guess our emotions.
“Recent studies show that the right side of our faces can express emotions better than the left. If true, then it makes sense for dogs and humans to see the right hand side of a face first.”
【小題1】 Why are dogs seen as man’s best friend according to the passage?

A.Because dogs are the closest animals to humans.
B.Because dogs can read the emotions in humans’ faces easily.
C.Because dogs can understand us better when we feel sad.
D.Because dogs are good at expressing emotions.
【小題2】The dogs’ left gaze bias helps them _______.
A.get along well with humans B.express emotions quickly
C.have more understanding friends D.remember more new faces
【小題3】The passage mainly wants to tell us that _______.
A.dogs have been man’s best friends for thousands of years
B.humans have a “l(fā)eft gaze bias”
C.the “l(fā)eft gaze bias” works on all animals
D.dogs can read emotions the same as humans

Let’s face it: homework can be almost as frustrating (沮喪) for parents as it is for kids. Getting kids to do their homework can be a challenge, and when they do sit down to study, a lot of other problems can appear.
Doing homework may not be as fun as playing video games or chatting with friends, but it shouldn’t be something that kids hate. Your children’s assignments (任務(wù)) should help them build a skill or learn something new.
You can help by being a homework monitor, stepping in to answer questions or offer encouragement. This gives you a chance to see what they are learning and how well they understand the material. It helps you understand their learning style and shows you care about their education.
Many kids refuse to study by asking why they have to learn things they’ll never use in real life. If your son or daughter shows little interest in their assignments, you can make them seem more important by pointing out ways you use them in daily life.
If parents feel that their kids are overloaded (超負(fù)荷), they can talk about it with the teachers. If you think it takes your child too long to finish homework, try to make a decision whether the problem lies in having too much work or managing time poorly.
If your child complains of boredom while doing homework, give him or her the following suggestions:
Get help from friends: if your children are bored with an assignment, let them call a friend for help or invite a friend over to work on it with them.
Add physical activity: set mini-goals for homework and allow time for relaxing, jumping around, or a snack after each goal is completed. For a kid who can’t sit still, find active ways to study.
Turn the tables: let your children teach you a lesson. Let them give you a test on the things they have just learned.

American English and British English are very different. Sometimes this difference is so big that the two seem like different languages!
Some words in British English mean things that are different in American English. For example a “raincoat” (American English) is called a “Mackintosh” in British English. But in America, a mackintosh is a kind of computer.
Most American sayings (諺語(yǔ)) mean nothing to the British. For example, Americans like to say, “Wake up and smell the coffee” which means “wake up and face reality(現(xiàn)實(shí))”. But the British think it is silly-they do not drink coffee in the morning. Instead, most of them drink tea.
Of course, the two languages are the same in many ways. To “call” someone (American English) is to “ring” somebody in Britain. The two languages borrow from each other a lot. But for foreign students learning English, there can be many problems. After all, American English and British English have, over the years, become so different. Foreign students often learn British English, come to the USA, and cannot understand any American English! So you must ask yourself—where do I want to go in the future – America or England? If it is England, you should learn British English. But if you want to study in America, try learning as much true American English as possible. Watch American movies, listen to American songs, read books written in American English, and talk with an American accent (口音) — not a British one!
【小題1】 Some American English and British English are different in meanings.
【小題2】“Mackintosh” is a kind of computer in England.
【小題3】 A lot of Englishmen like drinking coffee in the morning.
【小題4】 British English and American English borrow a lot from each other.
【小題5】 If you want to study in England, you’d better learn British English.
