Soon computers and other machines will be able to remember you by looking at your eyes! The program works because everyone’s eyes are different. So in the future you won’t have to remember a number when you want to use a machine or take money out of a bank. You’ll just have to look at the machine and it will be able to tell who you are.
The eye-recognition(眼睛識別) program is already being tested in shops and banks in the USA, Britain and France. Soon, this technology(技術(shù)) will change all other ways of finding out who people are.
However, scientists are working on other systems. Machines will soon be able to know you from the shape of your face or hands or even your smell! We already have machines that can tell who you are from your voice or the mark made by your fingers.
Eye-recognition is better than other kinds because your eyes don’t change as you get older, or get dirty like hands or fingers. And even twins have different eyes, so the program can be up to 94% correct, depending on(依靠) how good the technology is. Some programs may only be right 51% of the time. In Britain, it was found that 91% of people who had tried it said that they liked the idea of eye-recognition.
In the future your computer will be looking at you in the eye. So smile!
【小題1】 How does the eye-recognition program work?

A.You type in your number.B.You say your name.
C.You look at the machine. D.You show your ID card.
【小題2】Why can the eye-recognition program be up to 94% correct?
A.Because eyes hardly change.
B.Because the program is widely used around the world.
C.Because people like the idea of the program.
D.Because hands or fingers can get dirty.
【小題3】 Which recognition program has been already in use?
A.Remembering smells.
B.Remembering eyes.
C.Remembering fingerprints.
D.Remembering the shape of faces.
【小題4】 Which of the following is TRUE?

Carbon monoxide poisoning (一氧化碳中毒) causes death and injuries around the world. This gas is a problem in all parts of the world that experience cold weather. A few years ago, America’s Centers for Disease Control (C. D. C.) studied deaths linked (聯(lián)系) with carbon monoxide poisoning. It found that the number of carbon monoxide deaths in the United States was greatest in January. The C.D.C. also found that carbon monoxide kills more than four hundred Americans each year. And, it said more than twenty thousand people are taken to hospital for treatment of health problems linked with the gas.
Carbon monoxide is called the silent killer because people do not know it is in the air. The gas has no color, no taste and no smell. It does not cause burning eyes. And it does not cause people to cough. Yet, carbon monoxide gas is very deadly (致命的). It steals the body’s ability to use oxygen.
Carbon monoxide makes it difficult for the blood to carry oxygen to body tissues (血管). It does this by linking with the blood. When the gas links with the blood, the blood is no longer able to carry oxygen to the tissues that need it. Damage (損害) to the body can begin very quickly from large amounts (數(shù)量) of carbon monoxide.
How quickly this can happen depend on how long a person is breathing the gas and how much gas he or she breathes in.
Carbon monoxide poisoning has warning signs(標(biāo)志). But people have to be awake to realize them. Small amounts of the gas will cause a person’s head to hurt. He or she may begin to feel tired. Their stomachs may feel sick. The room may appear to be turning around. The person may have trouble thinking clearly.
People develop serious headache as the amount of the gas continues to enter their blood. They will begin to feel very tired and sleepy. They may have terrible stomachache.
Doctors say carbon monoxide influences people differently. For example a small child will experience health problems or die much sooner than an adult. The general health of the person or his or her age can also be important.
【小題1】The damage of carbon monoxide to the body has something to do with _____.

A.the amount a person breathes in
B.whether a person is healthy
C.how many signs a person finds
D.a(chǎn)ges of people
【小題2】One of the signs of carbon monoxide poisoning is _____.

【小題3】Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.Carbon monoxide poisoning seldom happens in cold areas.
B.Twenty thousand Americans are killed by carbon monoxide each year.
C.Most people know whether there is carbon monoxide in the air.

【小題4】What does the passage mainly talk about?
A.Warning signs that carbon monoxide poisoning has.
B.Reasons why carbon monoxide can cause person’s death.

Sales of laptop computers passed desktops in the U.S. for the first time ever this fall, according to market-research firm IDC. That's bad news for backs, necks and shoulders.
Laptops are bad for our body. When you work at a computer, the keyboard should be at elbow height and the monitor should be roughly at eye level, so you can sit well in a chair. But most users simply set their laptops on a desk or table. The keyboard is too high, which makes your arms reach up, your shoulders feel tired and your wrists bend down. The monitor is too low, which pulls your head and neck forward and down and your back may feel hurt.
That's OK if you use your laptop for a short time. But if you use one for hours without stopping – as do millions of college students, business travelers, telecommuters, video-gamers and growing numbers of office workers – your body may feel hurt. Ergonomics experts have warned about laptop problems for years. But people still like laptops better than the desktops. And they use laptops anywhere – in bed, on the floor – in all kinds of positions.
“How can a mouse or a keyboard hurt you?” says Thomas Caffrey, the founder of Myofactors LLC, “Wrong positions can be bad for your body. As time goes by, a wrong position can lead to pain in the neck, shoulders, back and arms, as well as headaches.”
【小題1】When you work at a computer, the keyboard should be ________.

【小題4】Using a laptop in a wrong position may make ________.
A.people’s sight lowerB.people have cancer

Can plants eat people? Probably not, but there are many plants that eat meat. Some of them are big. And they can eat small animals. One famous meat-eating plant is the Venus flytrap(捕蠅草).
The Venus flytrap is a very strange plant. It grows in dry parts of the United States. Its leaves are like the pages of a book. They can open and close very quickly. Inside the leaves, there are three small hairs. If a fly touches one of the hairs, the leaf closes quickly. The fly cannot get out. In about half an hour, the leaf presses the fly until it is dead. Then, the plant covers the fly. Slowly, the plant eats the fly.
Why do plants do it? Most plants get what they need from the sun, the air, and the ground. In some places, the ground is very poor. It doesn't have all these important things, especially nitrogen(氮). The iPhone 4S is a touchscreen-based smartphone developed by Apple Inc. It is the fifth generation of the iPhone, succeeding the iPhone 4, and was announced on October 4, 2011. Siri on iPhone 4S is like a person assistant. It lets you use your voice to do things on the iPhone. You can just talk to Siri as you talk to a person. Siri understands what you say, knows what you mean, and even talks back.
Say something like “Tell my wife I’m running late.” “Remind me to call the doctor.”“Any fast food restaurants around here?” Siri does what you say, finds the information you need, then answers you. It’s like you’re having a conversation with your assistant.
Siri not only understands what you say, but it’s also smart enough to know what you mean. So when you ask, “Any fast food restaurants around here?” Siri will reply, “I found a number of restaurants near you.” Then you can say, “Hmm. How about French fries?” Siri remembers that you just asked about restaurants for something to eat, so it will look for KFC restaurants in the neighborhood. And Siri is active, so it will question you until it finds what you’re looking for.
When you want to do something, just ask Siri to help you do it. Siri uses almost all the built-in apps on iPhone 4S. It writes texts and sends email messages. It searches the web for anything you need to know. It plays the songs you want to hear. It gives you directions and shows you around. It makes calls, plans meetings, helps you remember and wakes you up. In fact, ask Siri what it can do — it even speaks for itself.
Siri is easy to use and does so much. You’ll keep finding more and more ways to use it.
【小題1】When was iPhone 4S announced?
【小題2】What is Siri on iPhone 4S like?
【小題3】How can you use Siri to do things on the iPhone?
【小題4】Why will Siri look for KFC restaurants in the neighborhood?
