科目:初中英語 來源:人教版初三英語下冊Unit 10 You’re supposed to shake hands.習(xí)題鞏固練習(xí) 題型:閱讀單選
Social customs and ways of behaving change all the time. Things that were considered impolite many years ago are now acceptable. Just a few years ago, it was considered to be impolite behavior for a man to smoke on the street. No man who thought of himself as being a gentleman would make a fool of himself by smoking when a lady was in the room.
Customs also differ from country to country. Does a man walk on the left or the right of a woman in your country? Or doesn’t matter? What about table manners?
The Americans and British people not only speak the same language but also share a large number of social customs. For example, in both America and England, people shake hands when they meet each other for the first time. Also most Englishmen will open a door for a woman or offer their seats to women, and so will most Americans. Promptness(準(zhǔn)時(shí)) is important both in England and in America. That is, the dinner guest either arrive close to the time that has been made or calls up to explain his delay(耽誤).
The important thing to remember about social customs is not to do anything that might make other people feel uncomfortable—especially if they are your guests. There is an old story about a man who gave a very formal dinner party. When the food was served, one of the guests started to eat his peas with a knife. The other guests were amused or greatly surprised, but the host calmly picked up his knife and began eating in the same way. It would have been bad manners to make his guest feel foolish or uncomfortable.

On the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific, some villagers cut down trees in a special way. If a tree is too large to be cut down with an ax, they try something else-yelling(叫喊)at it. Woodsmen with special powers climb up a tree at dawn and yell at it at the top of their voices. They continue doing this for 30 days. After 30 days, the tree dies and falls over. It seems like the yelling kills the spirit of the tree. According to the villagers, it always works.
It's too bad they don' t have the advantages of modern technology and a scientific mind.
No matter how true the story actually is, it reminds me of something. I often yell at my wife, the telephone and workers. And sometimes I even yell at the T V, the newspaper and my children. I've been known to shake my fist(拳頭)and yell at the sky at times. People like me can often be seen around us.
The man next door yells at his car a lot. And this summer I heard him yell at a ladder for most of an afternoon. We modem, educated people yell at traffic, bills, banks and machines. Machines and relatives get yelled at the most.
It doesn't do much good. Machines and things just sit there. Even kicking it doesn't usually help. As for people, well, the Solomon Islanders may have a point. Yelling at living things does tend to kill the spirit in them. Sticks and stones may break our bones, but words will break our hearts.
1.How do the Solomon villagers cut down a very large tree?
A. By using a special ax. B. By using the power of nature.
C. By using a mysterious power. D. By yelling at the tree for a month.
2.From Paragraph 3 , we learn that the writer seems to be .
A. a kind man B. a nice father
C. a busy husband D. an impatient boss
3.What does the writer think about yelling in life?
A. It's good for everything. B. It solves traffic problems.
C. It makes machines work. D. It does no good to people.
4.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Yelling can solve all problems.
B. Yelling at others will never hurt their spirit.
C. It ' s common for people to yell at things around them.
D. Solomon Islanders never use an ax to cut down trees.
5.What does the story want to tell us?
A. Yelling hurts both sides. B. Everyone likes yelling.
C. Solomon Islanders are very stupid. D. Every living thing has its own spirit.
