There was a story many years ago of a school teacher--- Mrs. Thompson. She told the children on the first day that she loved them all the same. But that was a lie. There in the front row was a little boy named Teddy Stoddard. He didn’t play well with the other children and he always needed a bath. She did not like him.
Then Mrs. Thompson got to know that Teddy was actually a very good boy before the death of his mother. Mrs. Thompson was ashamed(慚愧的) of herself. She felt even worse , like all her other students, Teddy brought her a Christmas present too. It was his mother’s perfume(香水)。
Teddy said, “Mrs. Thompson, today you smell just like my Mom used to.” After the children left she cried for at least an hour. On that day, she stopped teaching reading, writing and math. Instead, she began to teach children.
Mrs. Thompson paid particular attention to Teddy. The boy’s mind seemed to come alive. The more she encourage him, the faster he improved. By the end of the sixth grade, Teddy had become one of the smartest children in the class.
Six years went by before she got a note from Teddy. He wrote that he had finished high school, third in his class, and she was still the best teacher he ever had in his whole life. He went to college. Mrs. Thompson got two more letters from him with the last one signed, Theodore F. Stoddard, M. D.(醫(yī)學(xué)博士).
The story doesn’t end there. On his wedding(婚禮) day, Dr. Stoddard whispered(低聲的說) in Mrs. Thompson’s ear, “Thank you, Mrs. Thompson, for believing in me. You made me feel important and showed me that I could make a difference.”
Mrs. Thompson, with tears in her eyes, whispered back, “Teddy, you have it all wrong. You were the one who taught me that I could make a difference. I didn’t know how to teach until I met you.”

What’s the most important thing for you to have in your life? Somebody says hard-work, others suggest knowledge, love and luck.
If you arrange the 26 English letters alphabetically(按字母表的順序) and use numbers to represent each of them, for example, 1 for a, 2 for b, 3 for c…, you can change an English word into a number. So hard-work becomes 8+1+18+4+23+15+18+11="98," meaning 98 is its mark; knowledge: 11+14+15+23+12+5+4+7+5="96," while love :12+15+22+5="54," and luck: 12+21+3+11="47," a small mark. None of these words can give one a full mark. What about money or prayer(祈禱)? They can’t , either.
Then what else? Don’t be worried. You can always find an answer to a problem in your life, when you change your way of looking at things or doing things, or your attitude. Yes, attitude is the word. See for yourself: attitude: 1+20+20+9+20+21+4+5="100," a full mark.
Different attitudes lead to different ways of life. Most times people hope for a better life. It is possible that you will have a change for the better after you have changed your attitude.
When you change your manner and become friendly towards others, you’ll meet more smiling faces. In the same way, if you take a positive(積極地) attitude towards failure(失敗), you’ll find you may have more chances to succeed.

In choosing a friend, one should be very careful. A good friend can help you study. You can have fun together and make each other happy. Sometimes you will meet fair-weather friends. They will be with you as long as you have money or luck, but when you are down, they will run away. How do I know when I have found a good friend? I look for certain qualities(品質(zhì)) of character, especially understanding, honesty and reliability(可靠).
Above all else, I look for understanding in a friend. A good friend tries to understand how another person is feeling. He is not quick to judge. Instead, he tries to learn from others. He puts himself in the other person’s place, and he tries to think of ways to be helpful. He is also a good listener.
At the same time, however, a good friend is honest. He does not look for faults(過錯(cuò)) in others. He notices their good points. In short, a friend will try to understand me and accept me.
Another quality of a friend is reliability. I can always depend on a good friend. If he tells me he will meet me somewhere at a certain time, I can be sure that he will be there. If I need a favor, he will do his best to help me. If I am in trouble, he will not run away from me.
There is a fourth quality that makes a friend special. A special friend is someone with whom we can have fun. We should enjoy our lives, and we would enjoy our friendship. That is why I especially like friends who are fun to be with. A good friend likes the same things I like. We share experiences and learn from each other. A good friend has a good sense of humor, too. He likes to laugh with me. That is how we share in the joy of being friends. And I know that he is looking for the same quality in me.
When I meet someone who is reliable, honest and understanding, I know I’ve found a friend!
小題1:Which of the following qualities the writer thinks is the most important in choosing a friend?

People come into your life for a reason, a season, or a lifetime. When you figure out which one it is, you will know exactly          to do for each person.
When people are in your life for a reason, it is          to meet a need you have expressed. They have come to assist you through a difficulty, to          you with guidance and support, to aid you physically, emotionally, or spiritually. They are there for the reason you need them to be. Then,          any wrong doing on your part or at any inconvenient time, they will say or do something to bring the relationship to an end. Sometimes they die, sometimes they           away, and sometimesthey act up and force you to take a stand. What you must          is that your need has been met, and your desire fulfilled. When their work is done, it is time to          on.
When people come into your life for a season, it is because your turn has come to share, grow and learn. They bring you a(n)          of peace, or make you laugh. They may teach you something you have          done. They usually give you an unbelievable amount of joy. Believe it! It is real! But, only for a season.
Lifetime relationships teach you lifetime lessons: those things you must build upon in order to have a          emotional (情感的) foundation. Your job is to accept the lessons, love the person, and put what you have          to use in all other relationships and areas of your life. It is said that love is sacred but friendship is sensible.
In a word, thank you for being part of my life,          you were here for a reason, a season or a lifetime.

When my son, Mark, was in the third grade, he saved all his pocket money(零用錢) for over three months to buy holiday presents. The third Saturday in December Mark said he had made his list and had twenty dollars in his pocket.
I drove him to a nearby supermarket. Mark picked up a hand basket and went in while I waited and watched in the car. It took Mark over 45 minutes to choose his presents. Finally he came to the checkout counter (交款處) and reached into his pocket for his money. It was not there! There was a hole in his pocket, but no money. Mark stood there holding his basket, tears falling down his face.
Then a surprising thing happened. A woman came up to Mark and took him in her arms."You would help me a lot if you let me pay for you," said the woman."It would be the most wonderful gift you could give me. I only ask that one day you will pass it on. When you grow up, I would like you to find someone you can help. When you help others, I know you will feel as good about it as I do now." Mark took the money, dried his tears and ran back to the checkout counter as fast as he could. That year we all enjoyed our gifts almost as much as Mark enjoyed giving them to us. I would like to say "thank you" to that very kind woman, and tell her that four years later, Mark went house to housecollecting blankets (毯子) and clothes for the homeless people in the fire. On the afternoon of October 13th, 2011 in Foshan, a two-year-old baby girl was playing in the street while her parents were busy working at their shop. But unfortunately, a truck went by and knocked into this poor girl. What's worse, without stopping to help the girl, the truck went over her, making this poor girl badly hurt.In the next 7 minutes, another truck went over her, and 18 passersby just walked past without taking notice of the poor baby.At last, this girl was saved by an old woman who collected waste in the streets, but unluckily the baby girl was so badly hurt that she died at last.
This event aroused harsh criticism (引起強(qiáng)烈批判) on the Internet. But why do people seem so kindhearted only on the Internet, but actually in the daily life we can hardly see them help each other? Lots of people made comments online: If you save someone who's hurt, he may say it's you who hurt him.You may have trouble when you do a good deed, because the law doesn't protect you.
We really need to learn from other countries in such cases. For example, in Singapore, if someone does wrong to the one who helps him, he has to say sorry in public and pay 3 times the medical fee as punishment.
