Every night, just after the sun goes down. Ruth Medjber talks with her neighbours in Dublin, Ireland, and takes a picture of them at their windows.
These photos, in some way, show people's lives during the global pandemic (大流行病).
"I started out taking photos of just friends and family. In this way, I could connect with them during this special time when people have to stay at home," the photographer explained. "I live alone, so I was missing the days when we were free to communicate with friends. Every evening, on my way to seeing friends, I had a sense of purpose."
Now she's making new friends.
The photo project has taken off online, and she has opened it up to volunteers. But they must be the people who live within 5 kilometers of her home—the Irish government doesn't allow people to go farther out than that.
"I pick a street each night and try to take photos of volunteers," Ruth said. "I usually take about four photos before it is completely dark, but two if I'm talking a lot—which I love to do."
She said more and more neighbours are joining in her photo project and it has now got a name, Low at Home.
"I think people like knowing that they're not alone even if they have to stay at home, and they really try to pick out those who are similar to themselves in the photos," she said. "It's also a different view(視角) of the pandemic: the more human view. Instead of showing what the pandemic has taken from us, it shows that it has given us more chances to be with family and friends and spend time together."
"I think we'd love most to find something nice, even in the most serious situation as it is now," Ruth said.

They hang from trees. They float in rivers and oceans. They are piled up in landfills(垃圾填埋場(chǎng)). Our frequent use of plastic products has, for many years, been a leading cause of serious environmental problems in the world. Last month, China drew up new guidelines(指導(dǎo)方針) aiming to bring plastic pollution under control across the country in five years’ time.
According to the new guidelines, the ban(禁令) on the use of non-biodegradable(不可生物降解的) plastic bags will have been applied to cities including Beijing and Shanghai by the end of this year. Other sources of plastic garbage will have been banned in these cities by the end of 2022. And that rule will have extended nationwide by late 2025.
Fortunately, China will not start from zero. Late last year, the country announced a national standard for biodegradable plastic shopping bags. It is technologically prepared for their production. Some regions have gained valuable experience that others can learn from. For example, Jilin province is leading the way by providing eco-friendly(環(huán)保的) shopping bags in some local supermarkets.
Given the size of China’s consumer market, one main obstacle(障礙) is the large number of plastic items that are being used by restaurants and e-commerce(電子商務(wù)) platforms. It’s estimated that nearly 25 billion plastic bags were used for deliveries in 2018. Most of them were rarely reused.
However, most Chinese people welcomed the government’s effort to reduce the use of plastics. “Beijing is thinking about the problem seriously,” said Tang Damin, a member of Greenpeace East Asia in Beijing. He added that the policy could be far more effective(有效) by using incentives(激勵(lì)) such as a deposit(押金) return program on plastic products.

B.It’s hard to make effective policy to solve the problem.

You may have wondered why there are fish tanks (at many doctor's and dentist's offices.Actually these medical professionals are trying to keep their working areas less stressful with the help of fish tanks.Because of the soft bubbling (冒泡聲) from the fish tanks, their patients are expected to feel less nervous or worried when staying there.
The sound of running water can make people feel relaxed. For this reason, places where water keeps running are often considered good choices for people to have deep thoughts and stay relaxed in mind.Even a small tabletop fountain (噴泉) can make a workspace more relaxing.Unlike loud noises, repeated natural sounds remind us that everything is OK." These slow but soft sounds are just the ones that bring us no harm,"said Orfeu Buxton,a professor at Pennsylvania State University." It seems like they are saying,' Don't worry ;don't worry ;don't worry."
Besides bringing a sense of peace to your indoor space,a fountain can also prevent noises from coming inside.I recently had a small indoor fountain for my workspace.I enjoy the fountain even when I'm not working at home.
If you want to have an indoor fountain too, there are plenty of wonderful ones on sale, which may cost you a lot.You can try making one yourself, using some inexpensive materials, like I did.And you will always keep it around ---- 1,000 doctor's offices can't be wrong about the relaxing effects of running water.
