Comfort Zone

I would never forget what I learned from the day when I left my junior high school. On the last day our teacher told us something_______that I would like to share with you.

He began by drawing a man standing in the middle of a circle. To make it more interesting, he drew things like a house, a car and a few friends inside the circle.

He asked, “Can anyone tell me what this is?” In a long silence, one student decided to______his idea,”The world?” The teacher said, “That’s close. This is your Comfort Zone. Inside your circle you have all the things that are inportant to you. Your home, your family, your friends and your job. People feel that inside this circle they are safe from any______.”

“Can anyone tell me what happens when you step out of this circle?” A strong silence came over the room. The same student replied,”You are afraid.” Another student said, “You may make mistakes.” The silence continued and our teacher smiled and asked,” When you make mistakes, what can the result be?” The first student said,” You______something.”

“Exactly, you are learning.”O(jiān)ur teacher turned to the blackboard and drew an arrow(箭頭) ____from the man to the outside of the circle. He went on saying,”When you leave your Comfort Zone, you put yourself out there, in a______that you are not comfortable with, The result is that you learn something that you did not know and you enlarge your knowledge to become a better person.”He turned again to the blackboard and drew a bigger circle around the original(原來(lái)的)circle, and______a few new things like more friends, a big house, etc.

A lesson from this story is that if you stay inside your Comfort Zone you will never be able to open your eyes to the outside world and learn, When you step out of your Comfort Zone, you will______make your circle bigger to challenge your mind and grow to be stronger, and all in all be a better person.

【題目】

When Mrs. Klein told her first graders to draw a picture of something for which they were thankful, she thought how little these children, who lived in a terrible neighborhood, actually had to be thankful for. Since it was Thanksgiving Day, she knew that most of the class would draw pictures of turkeys (火雞) or of Thanksgiving tables with lots of food.

What made Mrs. Klein surprised was Douglas’s picture. Douglas was so shy and likely to be found away from the others as they went outside for games. Douglas’s drawing was simply this:

A hand, clearly, but whose hand? The class was attracted by his picture. “I think it must be the hand of his mum or dad that brings us food,” said one student.

“A farmer,” said another, “because they grow the turkeys.”

“It looks more like a policeman, and they protect us.” “I think,” said Lavinia, who was always so serious, “that it is supposed to be all the hands that help us, but Douglas could only draw one of them.”

Mrs. Klein was very happy to see that the class showed so much interest in Douglas’ picture. When she had the others at work on another project, she went over to him and asked whose hand it was.

Douglas answered in a very low voice, “It’s yours, Teacher.”

Then Mrs. Klein remembered that she had taken Douglas by the hand from time to time; she often did that with the children. But that it should have meant so much to Douglas …

Perhaps, she thought, this was her Thanksgiving, and everybody’s Thanksgiving—not the material things we receive, but the small ways that we give something to others.

1When did the story happen?

A.On Thanksgiving Day.B.On Teacher’s Day.

C.After Thanksgiving Day.D.Before Christmas Eve.

2Douglas drew a picture of hand.

A.his mum’sB.a farmer’sC.his teacher’sD.a policeman’s

3What does the writer want to tell us?

A.Thanksgiving Day is popular.B.Being a good teacher is important.

C.Painting is necessary in our life.D.Giving is more meaningful than receiving.

Mother's Day is a holiday that celebrates and honors mothers in the United States. It is celebrated on the second Sunday in May. It became an official holiday in the country at the start of the 20th century as a way to honor mothers whose sons had died in war.

The holiday is celebrated in a number of ways. People give mothers gifts like flowers, cards, and jewelry to thank them for all their hard work.A popular symbol of the holiday is the carnation. This is because when the holiday first began in the U. S. people were encouraged to wear a red carnation if their mother was alive or a white carnation if their mother was dead. (joggers)

A few months ago, my neighborhood joined an army of joggers. They were there all the time; early morning, noon, and evenings. There were little old ladies in grey sweaters, young couples in Adidas shoes, middle-aged men with red faces. “Come on!”

My friend Alex encouraged me to join him as he jogged by my house every evening. “You'll feel great.”

Well, I had nothing against feeling great, so I took up jogging seriously and gave it a good two months of my life, and not a day more. According to my experience and the number of the people who left our neighbor jogging army, jogging is the most overvalued form of exercise around. I'm not alone in my opinion.

First of all, jogging is very hard on the body. Your legs and feet take a real pounding (重?fù)?/span>) while you run down a road for two or three miles. I developed foot, leg, and back problems. Then I read about a nationally famous jogger who died of a heart attack (心臟病突發(fā))while jogging, and I had something else to worry about. Jogging doesn't kill hundreds of people, but if you have any physical weaknesses, jogging will surely bring them out, as they did with me.

Secondly, I got no enjoyment out of jogging. Putting one foot in front of the other for forty-five minutes isn't my idea of fun. Some joggers say, “I love being out there with just my thoughts.” Well, my thoughts began to bore me, and most of them were on how much my legs hurt.

And how could I enjoy something that brought me pain? And that wasn't just the first week: it was practically every day for two months. I never got past the pain level, and pain isn't fun. So many other exercises, including walking, lead to almost the same results painlessly, so why jog?

I don't jog any more, and I don't think I ever will. I'm walking fast for two miles three times a week, and that feels good. I bicycle to work when the weather is good. I'm getting exercise, and I'm enjoying it at the same time. I could never say the same for jogging, and I've found a lot of better ways to stay in shape.

1What was the writer’s attitude towards jogging in the beginning?

A.He felt it was worth a try.B.He was very fond of it.

C.He was strongly against it.D.He thought it must be painful.

2Why did the writer give up jogging two months later?

A.He disliked doing exercise outside.B.He was afraid of having a heart attack.

C.He was worried about being left alone.D.He found it neither healthy nor interesting.

3What can we learn from the passage?

A.Not everyone enjoys jogging.B.Jogging is an exercise fit for everybody.

C.Jogging will surely cause physical illness.D.Jogging makes people feel greater than other sports.
