Learning the language of a country isn't enough. If you want to know the manners of your foreign friends, you will probably be surprised just how different they can be from your own.

A visitor to India should remember that people there are impolite(不禮貌)to use the left hand for passing food at table. The left hand is used for washing yourself. Also in India, you might see a man shaking his head at another to show that he is disagreeing(不同意). But in many parts of India, a rotating(轉(zhuǎn)動(dòng))movement of the head is to show agreement. In Bulgaria you shake your head to showyes, a nod to showno.

In Europe it is quite usual to cross your legs while sitting and talking to someone, even at an important meeting. But doing this could cause offence(反感)to a Thailander. Also touching the head of grown-up is just not done in Thailand.

Knowing about manners is useful when you are traveling, but you need to know the language used to express for ritual(禮節(jié)).

He was well known to everyone in town, and they were all very fond of him. 35 unfortunately, he was always treated differently from everyone else. Children 36 that they would hurt him, adults acted like he was unable to understand them, as if he was a baby.

On that day no one was thinking of Reggie as 43 a deaf person. This meant he could be treated just like any other little boy; and people saw a whole new side of him. Not only that, but Reggie had a 44 mind. On that day, using his usual gestures (手勢(shì)), Reggie was the one who could communicate best with everyone. This meant that people paid more attention to what he was saying, and they were surprised by his intelligence and his ability to find solutions to almost any problem. They realized that in normal life all Reggie needed was a little more time than others to communicate. That was the only 45 .

So the Day of Silence was the day when Reggie’s true nature became known. And it was the day that everyone realized you have to give people a chance to show how 46 they are.

I kept silent as I couldn’t explain 33 him it was just an emotional thing. To my 34 , he touched my face with his little hand and said, “Dear Mom, stop crying! You see, everything will be fine. You are my good 35 .So just get up and let’s get ready for school.” On hearing him say this to me, I couldn’t help laughing. It was so 36 for a child to say so. Later I realized that he had repeated(重復(fù)) almost all 37 I had told him while he was crying one morning.

The first time a child begins to speak, he tries to 38 what his parents have been telling

Even then, some of us don’t realize the child has learned the words from us only. Instead we start to put the blame(指責(zé))on his friends , or 42 who has talked to him when we’re not present.

So if you want your child to have perfect behavior, you’ll have to 43 a good example to him. And if you can’t do that, you have no 44 to expect your child to have such a thing. After all, the parents’ words and behavior have a great 45 over their child.
