【題目】

Have you ever seen a car without a driver? It sounds crazy, but these computer-driven driverless cars will soon be filling roads near you. Companies like Google and Tesla have been designing and testing these cars, and the technology is there-they just need to see if they're value for money ,work out insurance(保險)issues, and run final tests to check they can run alongside human-driven cars on the road.

So how do they work? The cars have sensors all around which can detect other cars and obstacles in the road. Sensors on the wheels also help when parking, so the car knows how far it is from the outside of the road or other parked cars. Road signs are read by cameras and satellite navigation systems are used so the car knows how to get to your destination. All you have to do is type in the address! Finally, a central computer system takes in all the information it receives from the sensors and cameras and processes this to work out when to speed up, brake and go.

Sound like your idea of heaven? Sitting back, looking out of the windows and even watching a film or reading a book while 'driving' would be possible with this new technology. You wouldn't have to worry about remembering directions to where you're going. In addition, computers are generally more efficient drivers than humans. They would also drive more safely than people-they are not influenced by music or friends, they would obey the speed limit and they have quicker reaction times in case of an emergency.

However, there are many disadvantages of driverless cars. Computers would have difficulties making ethical(倫理學(xué)的)decisions ; if a child ran into the road , would the computer choose to hit the child or change the direction immediately and potentially kill the car's passengers? Moreover, I personally find driving fun-I'd miss never being behind the wheel myself. There would also be many legal decisions to be made-should children, or drunk people, be allowed in a driverless car by themselves? Or would there need to be a responsible adult with a driving licence in the car at all times?

Although being driven around by a machine would perhaps mean that no one needs a driving licence, saving money for everyone, many people would be put out of a job when driverless cars appear. Bus, taxi and train drivers as well as driving instructors would be made unnecessary.

I'm not convinced I'd want a driverless car-but it's only a matter of time before they'll become more affordable and commonplace on our roads.

1What does the second paragraph mainly tell us?

A.How driverless cars work.B.How a central computer system runs.

C.Ways in which the sensors help driverless cars.D.The helpful system that driverless cars have.

2What can we know from the passage?

A.The writer is eager to have a driverless car.

B.Some problems won't be solved in the future.

C.Engineers are active in improving driverless cars.

D.More factors should be considered before driverless cars go on roads.

3The underlined word "potentially" in Paragraph 4 means “___”

A.possiblyB.successfullyC.especiallyD.naturally

4Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?

A.Driverless Cars: Are You Ready for Them?B.Driverless Cars: Are They Your Favorite?

C.Driverless Cars: A Model of New TechnologyD.Driverless Cars: Just Enjoy Them

【題目】任務(wù)型閱讀-簡答

Which type of Christmas songs are the bestThere are so many different parts to the Christmas period: jumpers, shopping, Christmas markets, decorations, songs. Without them, Christmas just wouldn't feel right. My personal favourite part of the festive period is the songs. There are traditional songs, such as Hark the Herald Angels Sing, Ding Dong Merrily on High and Good King Wenceslas, which you would normally hear in church.

Then there are the pop songs from throughout the years. Some of them have been recorded and re-recorded too many times to count.

In fact, almost every year people argue about which versions(版本)of certain Christmas songs are better. Eartha Kitt or Kylie Minogue's version of Santa Baby? What about Michael Bublé vs Frank Sinatra and their versions of Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas? The list goes on and on.

The most famous Christmas songs are undoubtedly the ones with a pleasant melody, talking about being home for Christmas or how much they love Christmas. All of them are easy to remember. Have a listen to Driving Home for Christmas by Chris Rea orI Wish It Could be Christmas Every Day by Wizzard. Some songs highlight how much we want to be with the people we love at this time of year, such as Blue Christmas by Elvis Presley, Lonely This Christmas by Mud or Leona Lewis' One More Sleep. The mainstream songs are the ones you'll hear in shops as you do your Christmas shopping or in restaurants all over Britain.

The Christmas songs that I love to listen to are the ones that don't really make much sense. Sometimes they take you back to childhood when you wouldn't be laughed at for asking Santa for a giraffe. And the rest are just silly for the sake of it. My favourite silly Christmas songs are I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmasby Kacey Musgraves, Never Do a Tango With an Eskimo by Alma Cogan and Proper Crimbo by Bo Selecta.

The absolute best Christmas song is definitely Fairytale of New York by The Pogues ft. Kirsty MacColl. It's not really Christmas until you've listened to that.

1.How many different parts of the Christmas period are there?

2Where can you hear traditional Christmas songs?

3Do people argue about which versions of certain Christmas songs are better almost every year?

4What does the writer mainly talk about in the fourth paragraph?

5Why does the writer love the songs that don't really make much sense?

Rooftop Gardens

Have you ever seen a rooftop garden—

a garden on the top of a roof? Many people are

finding it good for the environment and good for

themselves.

Cities can be as much as 4—10 degrees

warmer than the countryside. Green rooftops

can actually help cool the air in cities. A single green roof will not do much to change the temperature of a city. However, when more buildings begin to change their rooftops into green spaces, it makes a real difference. Buildings that are cooler also use air conditioning less often. This reduces the amount of energy a building uses, which is good for the environment. Cities are usually more polluted than other areas. Plants on rooftops can even help clean the air. Gardens in the city can also provide a place for birds and bugs to live in.

One unusual rooftop garden is located above Children’s Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. The garden covers an area of 7, 500 square feet. The garden has flowers, fountains (噴泉),even a goldfish pond, and also paths that children can walk on in slippers or with bare feet. It is used as a place for the children and their parents to relax and be close to nature without leaving the hospital. Another interesting garden is on the rooftop of the Royal York Hotel in Toronto, Canada. A large vegetable garden has been planted on the roof. The hotel’s chefs (廚師)can pick fresh vegetables from the roof.

Now not all buildings have rooftop gardens. One reason is that rooftop gardens can be more expensive than traditional rooftops. However, they may save on heating and cooling bills in the future. Also, a roof needs to be flat and strong enough to support the weight of the garden.

Some people may not know about rooftop gardens and how good they can be for the environment. But word is starting to get out. You may want to keep your eyes on the skies when you walk in your town or city. You never know when you might find a secret garden many feet above the ground.

1What is a rooftop garden?

2What is the second paragraph mainly about?

3What is the rooftop garden in Children’s Hospital in St. Louis used as?

4Why is the rooftop garden of the Royal York Hotel interesting?

5Why don’t all buildings have rooftop gardens?

【題目】 What’s on your plate?

Three people from different parts of the world talk about what they eat each day.

Masumi:

In Japan, we eat rice at every meal.

For breakfast, we have rice, fish, and soap. At 12:00 I have bento, which is a lunch box. My Indian wife Evan makes this for me every day. There are small dishes of rice, fish, vegetables, eggs, and sometimes meat. In the evening, we have more fish, maybe with beans.

Caroline:

I eat little and early. I have toast and cereal for breakfast, and salad for lunch at about 11:30. For dinner I usually eat chicken or fish. If I have a snack between meals, it’s always fruit. At home I like cooking for friends. For me the dinner table is the centre of the home.

Adella:

For Spanish people, breakfast is the smallest meal—just bread and jam and a cup of coffee. We have lunch at about 2:00, and it’s a big meal. Perhaps some pasta, and then salad, then fish or meat, then a dessert.

In the evening, I like going to bars with my friends. We have tapas. Tapas are lots of little dishes. Then about 10:00 we go to a restaurant, and maybe have some seafood and rice. Dinner is a lot smaller than lunch. We go to bed very late.

1Who has salad for lunch at about 11:30?
