Lizzie-s diary from Antarctica (南極洲)
Day 3: Tuesday December 2
We planned to go to Rothera that morning. We’d be staying there for the next two weeks. Because Antarctica is the windiest place on earth, sometimes you can’t fly at all.
We had a nervous wait over breakfast to find out if we’d be leaving that day. People have to stay in Stanley for weeks while the pilots wait for good weather
It turned clear at 9:30 and we took off at 10:30 on a little red plane called a Dash-7. But even when we were in the air, there was still a chance we wouldn’t be able to fly the whole day.
Day 4: Wednesday December 3
After waking up in the Antarctic for the first time today I can understand why everybody who comes here falls in love with the place. It is really beautiful.
We’re staying at Rothera Survey base with mountains of ice all around. It s about minus 20C today, which for me is very cold, but the regulars(常客) here are often seen walking around in T-shirts !
Day 5: Thursday December 4
I woke up to another beautiful sunny day here in the Antarctic. I’m told it’s a bit colder today, about minus 50C , but it’s not very windy so it feels warmer. Those of us who are new to the bas have to do a spccial training course before we're allowed to go off base to other stations or to go snowboarding over the nearby hill.
Day 7: Saturday December 6
Not a cloud in the sky and it’s warm enough to sit outside (in a jacket).
The most amazing thing about this place is how the scenery (鳳景) changes every day.
At first I thought I was going mad. I’d step outside in the morning and think, “I’m sure that big mountain of ice wasn’t there yesterday.” It’s because the sea ice is always moving—slowly thankfully !

What do you think of black cats? Are they unluckier than cats of other colors? Many people in Western countries think so.Scientists at the University of California,Berkeley (UC Berkeley),did a study on cat colors and people's understandings of cat personalities.
The study found that people do judge(判斷) cat personalities by color.Scientists did a survey on the Internet. There were 49statements (描述) matching five cat colorings with 10personalities.People think orange and bi-colored (雙色的) cats are friendly,tri-colored (三色的) cats are not generous, and white cats are calm, lazy and shy.As for black cats, people think they don't have special personalities.
But why do so many people dislike keeping black cats as pets?People think black cats have less special personalities, which might be because of their bad reputation (口碑).They think black cats may bring bad luck, especially at Halloween.Movies and television shows also make people believe that.
Although people have these ideas,UC Berkeley scientists give another reason:people don't think black cats are pretty enough. After all, nothing can show black cats are unluckier than other cats."You can't judge a cat by its color, because it's the personality of the cat,not the color, that will let you know if the cat is right for you,"Cathy Marden,a scientist said.

A city without cars would be very strange, right? But Venice is such a city.
Venice is in the northeast of Italy. It wasn’t built on land, like Beijing or Shanghai, but on more than 110 islands. Seawater is everywhere around the city.
Even so, travel isn’t difficult. The waterways have always been the best ways to get around. There are 117 waterways and more than 400 bridges that can guide you where you want to go. People in Venice move from place to place by boat. They like to enjoy the scenery and cool summer nights while taking boat trips. They can talk to other people as they go along.
Venice grew out of small islands in saltwater lakes when some Italians escaped from a war more than 1,500 years ago, and built homes there.
Water makes the city special, but it is also a big problem.
Once, people used too much underground water. This made the city get lower little by little. Now the city has gone down by 23 centimeters. Another problem is the rising seawater. The temperature has risen over the years. This has made the ice of the Arctic Ocean (北冰洋)
melt (融化).
Every year, high waters hit the city in autumn and winter. When a lot of water comes, more than half of the city is underwater.
Scientists are trying different ways to stop the city from getting even lower.

A. In Italy. B. In Canada. C. In England. D. In America.
2.Which is the most impossible way for people in Venice to get around ?
A. On foot. B. By boat. C. By car. D. By bike.
3.Why is Venice still getting lower and lower?
A. Because too many people live there. B. Because the rising temperature has made the ice melt.
C. Because lots of bridges have been built. D. Because the underground water is rising.
4.What seasons are dangerous for Venice because of high waters?
A. Summer and autumn. B. Autumn and winter. C. Summer and winter. D. Spring and winter.
5.The passage is mainly about .
A. the waterways of Venice B. the history of Venice C. the scenery of Venice D. the problem of Venice

Social media is a big part of most people’s lives. There are social apps and sites like WeChat and Sina Weibo, as well as video apps like Douyin and Kuaishou. How do you behave when you use these apps?
Recently researchers at the University of Sussex, UK, studied social media users ranging from 10 to 15 years old. They found there are four personality types. They are either a “geek (極客)”, an “internet celebrity (網(wǎng)紅)”, a “l(fā)urker (潛伏者)” or a “victim (受害者)” on social media.
Victims
Victims don’t have enough knowledge to keep themselves safe online. To avoid being a victim, you should follow these tips.
First, check your privacy settings on social media. Choose “Friends only” for your posts.
Second, do not share your birthday, age, or place of birth. This information can be used to find out more about you.
Lastly, do not share the location of your home or your vacation plans. Thieves may break into your home if they know you are not there.
Geeks
Geeks are active social media users who care about their privacy (隱私). They often post creative works online, using unreal names.
The movie The Social Network tells the story of Mark Zuckerberg. He is comfortable in his online life, but finds life in the real world to be much more difficult to deal with. This can remind “geeks” to try to avoid becoming addicted (上癮的) to the Internet and take part in more face-to-face communication.
Internet celebrities
Internet celebrities might become well-known for their singing or dancing. And many of them share almost every aspect of their lives in order to attract more fans.
Being a teenage internet celebrity can sometimes cause problems in the real world, according to an article published by The Atlantic. Teenage celebrities might spend less time studying and more time online, which may be harmful to their study
Lurkers
Most teenagers probably fall into the type – “l(fā)urkers”. You probably have such friends who prefer to “l(fā)ike” and share links , rather than creating their own content online.
The problem for these teenagers is that they may find it difficult to express themselves. But at least they make sure to protect their privacy.
