LONDON—Manchester is Britain’s fattest city, a survey for “Men’s Health” has found, beating Glasgow for the first time since the magazine started examining the issue three years ago.

Editor Pete Muir said the survey had looked at a variety of factors from gym membership to heart disease rates to find the fattest city. “Manchester has more fast food restaurants than anywhere else in the UK,” he told Reuters. “People are taking the easy choice—eating and then just sitting in front of the TV.”

Manchester’s problem is part of a wider trend. On Thursday, the Office of National Statistics (ONS) blamed a lack of exercise and poor diet for a fifth of adult Britons being obese (過(guò)度肥胖的). “Obesity is a major risky factor connected with heart disease, diabetes and premature death (糖尿病和早亡).” said an ONS survey. “None of the 108 young men in the survey reported eating five portions of fruit or vegetables on average each day.”

In Manchester, the head of the city’s public health programs said he did not believe that they were necessarily the fattest city, but that they did have problems and were aiming to address them. Social deprivation (貧困) was a major factor. “One of the myths is that the stressed-out rich businessman is the one who is overweight,” David Regan told Reuters. “In fact, it is the poor areas that have the most problems. We aim not to be the fattest but the fittest city but we have a long way to go.”

Second in the survey is Stoke-on-Trent, followed by Liverpool, Swansea and Lecicester. Glasgow is sixth.

1.Manchester took the place of __________ and became Britain’s fattest city.

A.Liverpool B.London C.Stoke-on-Trent D.Glasgow

2.Obesity may lead to the following EXCEPT __________.

A.Heart disease B.diabetes C.premature death D.a lack of exercise

3.This article is most probably taken from __________.

A.a newspaper B.a science book C.a novel D.a biography

I had an old neighbour, a doctor named Gibbs. When Doctor Gibbs wasn't saving lives,he was planting trees. He had some interesting ideas about planting trees. He hardly watered his new trees.

Once I asked why and he told me that watering plants made them grow weaker. He said he had to make things difficult for the trees so that only the strongest could survive. He talked about how watering trees made them develop shallow roots and how, if they were not watered, trees would grow deep roots in search of water.

So, instead of watering his trees every morning, he'd beat them with a rolled up newspaper. I asked him why he did that, and he said it was to get the trees' attention.

Doctor Gibbs died a couple of years after I left home. Sometimes I walked by his house and looked at the trees I'd watched him plant 25 years ago. They were tall and strong.

I planted several trees myself a few years ago. Two years of caring for these trees meant they grew up weakly. Every time a cold wind blew, my trees shook. Adversity seemed to be good for Doctor Gibb's trees, they could never relax.

Every night before I go to bed,I check on my two sons. I often pray(祈禱)that their lives will be easy. But lately I've been thinking that it's time to change my prayer. I know my children are going to experience difficulties. There's always a cold wind blowing somewhere. What we need to do is to pray for deep roots,so when the rains fall and the winds blow,we won't be separated.

1.What did Doctor Gibbs do to the trees he planted?

A.He let them grow quickly. B.He beat them to get their attention.

C.He helped them search for water. D.He read a newspaper near them.

2.What does the word "Adversity" in Paragraph 5 mean?

A.Difficult living conditions. B.Little water.

C.Enough care or attention. D.Bad weather.

3.What does the writer learn from Doctor Gibbs?

A.Elders are treasures.

B.No pain,no gain.

C.Two heads are better than one.

D.Only those who bear(容忍)the most become the highest.
