【題目】On the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific, some villagers cut down trees in a special way. If a tree is too large to be cut down with an ax, they try something else-yelling(叫喊)at it. Woodsmen with special powers climb up a tree at dawn and yell at it at the top of their voices. They continue doing this for 30 days. After 30 days, the tree dies and falls over. It seems like the yelling kills the spirit of the tree. According to the villagers, it always works.

It's too bad they don' t have the advantages of modern technology and a scientific mind.

No matter how true the story actually is, it reminds me of something. I often yell at my wife, the telephone and workers. And sometimes I even yell at the T V, the newspaper and my children. I've been known to shake my fist(拳頭)and yell at the sky at times. People like me can often be seen around us.

The man next door yells at his car a lot. And this summer I heard him yell at a ladder for most of an afternoon. We modem, educated people yell at traffic, bills, banks and machines. Machines and relatives get yelled at the most.

It doesn't do much good. Machines and things just sit there. Even kicking it doesn't usually help. As for people, well, the Solomon Islanders may have a point. Yelling at living things does tend to kill the spirit in them. Sticks and stones may break our bones, but words will break our hearts.

1How do the Solomon villagers cut down a very large tree?

A. By using a special ax. B. By using the power of nature.

C. By using a mysterious power. D. By yelling at the tree for a month.

A. a kind man B. a nice father

C. a busy husband D. an impatient boss

3What does the writer think about yelling in life?

A. It's good for everything. B. It solves traffic problems.

C. It makes machines work. D. It does no good to people.

4Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A. Yelling can solve all problems.

B. Yelling at others will never hurt their spirit.

C. It ' s common for people to yell at things around them.

D. Solomon Islanders never use an ax to cut down trees.

The food tastes good and warm, and a family meal brings everyone together. In some families, meals are often the only times everyone sees one another at the same time.

Another reason people enjoy home cooking is that it is often a way of showing love. A parent who makes some cookies is not just satisfying (滿足) a child’s sweet tooth. She or he is sending a message. The message says, “I care about you enough to spend an hour making cookies that you will eat up in 15 minutes if I let you.”

There is also something about the smell of home cooking. The smell of home cooking pleases people of all ages. It makes most of us feel good and loved—even if we are the ones doing the cooking! Next time you smell a cake making, stop for a moment and pay attention to your mood (心情).

1Why do fewer people cook now?

A. Many people are too busy. B. Because they are too tired to cook.

C. Many people don’t like cooking. D. They don’t like family meals.
