四、任務(wù)型閱讀。(10分)

I would like to talk to you about space vegetables, and to show you that space vegetables are healthy and good for you.

Space vegetables are grown from seeds that have been taken to and brought back from outer space. The seeds are affected by the radiation (輻射) and low gravity in outer space. When they are brought back to Earth, these seeds produce vegetables that are bigger, healthier and more nutritious (有營養(yǎng)的) than normal vegetables. However, some people worry about eating space vegetables. They think that space vegetables might not be good for us and could give us cancer as a result of their exposure (暴露) to radiation in space. People should not be scared,as space vegetables are actually perfectly healthy.

Here are some facts that you should know about space vegetables:

Space vegetables are grown from seeds that are carefully selected. When seeds are brought back from space, they are tested to make sure that the vegetables they grow will be safe to eat. There are no traces (痕跡) of radiation after testing.

Space vegetables are better for you than normal vegetables. For example, space tomatoes stay fresh for twenty days, which is one week longer than normal tomatoes. Another popular space vegetable is the peppers. Space peppers contain 20 percent more vitamin C than normal peppers.

After modified (轉(zhuǎn)基因) foods came onto the market, people worried that they were eating unknown things. For example,if nut genes are put inside potatoes, people allergic (過敏的) to nuts might get very sick from eating these potatoes because they do not know they are also eating nuts. Unlike genetically modified foods, space vegetables have not been genetically changed. This means that no new genes are put into the vegetables. Therefore, they won’t damage your health.

Many of us have ever loved the two toy bears—a brown Teddy bear and a yellow Winnie-the-Pooh bear. The two toy bears come from real stories in life.

In 1902,Theodore Roosevelt,President of theUSA. went on hunting. The hunting dogs found an old bear in the forest near Washington   D. C. and the guide asked the president to shoot it. But President Roosevelt disagreed. A cartoonist (漫畫家) drew a cartoon showing that the president refused to shoot the bear. Soon, the bear began to appear in other newspapers. People named the bear Teddy which was Theodore's nickname (昵稱) .

In 1913, a captain named Harry Colebourn paid 20 dollars for a black bear which was born in the Canadian countryside. The captain5s hometown,Winnipeg,

was the origin (起源) of the bear's name. In Winnipeg,Winnie served as the mascot (吉祥物) . When World War 1 began, the captain went to France. Winnie was sent to London Zoo which many kids often visited. Because of its lovely look, the bear became popular with children.

三、閱讀理解。(20分)

                               A

In the southern part of our planet, there's a place that's covered with snow and ice all year round. But it has the clearest and cleanest air. Amazingly,in this place, the sun sometimes hangs even in the midnight sky. This place is the Antarctica  (南 極洲) :the coldest, windiest and harshest (惡劣的) place on the Earth.

As the world s  least-known place, the Antarctica is of great interest to scientists around the world. In 1983,China joined the Antarctic Treaty (《南極條約》) . The treaty made the Antarctica a peaceful place for member countries to do scientific research. During the 30 years? China has sent many scientists to the Antarctica. They mostly look at the resources under the icy land and do research about climate changes and marine (海洋的) biology.

The Antarctica is a place with fantastic views. However, life there is very hard. Food is one of the biggest problems. Frozen (速凍) food which can be heated easily is peopled daily food. Fresh vegetables are hard to grow in the cold weather. Therefore, scientists often eat dried or canned vegetables.

Sleep is also troublesome. In the Antarctica, summer lasts from November to March. During this period, the Antarctica points to the sun and receives sunlight 24 hours a day. In order to get some sleep, scientists cover the windows with black plastic cloth to create “night”.

Working in the Antarctica is dangerous, especially when meeting gale-force (七 級(jí)以上的) winds. Sometimes the wind is even stronger than a typhoon It can easily blow people away. So there are ropes that connect buildings of some research stations. People can hold these ropes to keep theit balance in forceful winds.

What's more, communicating with others is difficult. Without cables and Internet in some research stations,two-way radios are the only tools to communicate. If people want to say hello to friends and relatives, they can use satellite phones.

Although it is challenging to work in the Antarctica, scientists' passion to learn about this mysterious land will never end. It is hopeful that one day they will step every corner of this icy land.
