To get up early to study or to stay up late to study? That is the question that puzzles most English learners.

A recent study by Dr.David Johnson discovered that late bedtimes led to lower grades.“Late bedtimes during weekdays and weekends,catch-up sleep on wekends and more daytime sleepiness badly influence students’ English study performance. They forget the new words more easily and have difficulty talking about their thoughts in English clearly.”

However, another study by Dr.Ali on Biocenter.com showed there is no connection between a student’s sleep habit and his study performance.“We found that different sleeping habits do not influence the performance of students in their English study,”Ali said.

Emily Jane,a college student, said she prefers to study differently depending on when the English test is.Normally, she only gets up early to study if she has an exam in the morning. She’ll arrive at school around 6:30 a.m.and study for her exam.If the test is a few days away,Jane said she will stay up later.

“Personally,I think that creativity or projects come at night,”Kyle said.Kyle does quite well in English.During the week,he will usually get up early to read texts aloud around 6 a.m.and be at school by 7 a.m.After that,he will stay up to do English reading until 1 or 2 a.m.On the weekends,he will sleep until about 1 p.m.

It is impossible to know for sure if it is better to stay up late and study or to wake up early to do so.But doctors advised students to avoid all-nighters because they won’t help as much as students think.

When it comes to the letter grade on your test or homework, you might notice that there is no letter E. Have you ever thought about why that is so?

In the A, B, C, D and F grading system, the first four letters are typically considered passing grades. An F in this system simply stands for“fail”.The word“fail”happens to start with the letter F, which seems to leave out the letter E. The fact”.Some schools have U grade for“unsatisfactory”,or I grade for “incomplete”.

Even with all this said, we should also point out that E grade actually has been

used pretty commonly throughout the history of letter grades in the US.

The first college in the US to use a letter grading system like the ones we use today is Mount Holyoke College. In 1897,they began to use the following grading scale:

A: 95-100%(excellent) B: 85-94%(good) C: 76-84%(fair)

D: 75%(barely passed) E: below 75%(failed)

We can see the inclusion of E instead of F.

Gradually, the letter grading system became more popular throughout the US. However, many schools decided to drop the E grade and go straight to F.There is no evidence(證據(jù)) to really support this, but one possible explanation is that teachers were worried that some students and parents might mistake E for “excellent”.

Why do we have letter grades? Well, part of the reason is that they made grading simpler during a time of great change for schools. As the 20th century began, growing cities and an increase in immigration led to larger school classrooms. Most teachers at that time thought this new letter grading system was an easy, fair and clear way to grade students.

Today, more and more people argue that letter grades don’t fully reflect(反映) student learning。However,as teachers try to improve grading methods, many parents continue to favor the letter grades they got as kids, they are familiar(熟悉) and easy for parents to understand. So while they might not be perfect, the letter grades probably aren’t going away any time soon.

1what does an F stand for in the A、B、C、D and F grading system?

2when was the letter grading system first used in the US college?

3what is one possible explanation for dropping the E grade?

4what did most teachers think of the letter grading system in the 20th century?

5why do many parents still prefer the letter grades today?

Stories and Art of Chinese Fans

You may think you cannot live through summer without air conditioners. But in ancient China, hand fans were almost the only ones to help people keep cool.

Chinese people started to use hand fans over 2,000 years ago. The fans came in different shapes, such as round and square. They were also made from a11 kinds of materials.Palm leaf fans were cheap and easy to make. Feather fans(羽毛扇) showed the owner’s high status.Sandalwood(檀香)fans could send out a sweet smell.

Later, hand fans became far more than just something that could cool you down. They developed into art works,in which tuanshan (round fans)and zheshan(folded fans)were the most common.

In the shape of a full moon, tuanshan was usually made of silk. They had beautiful birds and flowers on them.Women especially those in the imperial palace(皇宮),liked to use them.Meanwhile, men, especially the literati(文人),used zheshan. The literati liked them because zheshan were usually made of paper and they could paint and write poems on them.It was a way for them to show off their ability in literature, painting and handwriting.Almost anything can be painted on zheshan.

Today,Chinese people still use these fans, only not many people write or paint on them any more.Next time when you are waving a fan, you may think of the stories behind it.
