A short Chinese man seems to be the tallest in the world right now. Jack Ma (Ma Yun), 50, is executive chairman (董事局主席) of Alibaba(阿里巴巴) Group. On Sept 19, Alibaba went public on the New York Stock Exchange (紐約證券交易所), raising $25 billion through an IPO (首次公開發(fā)行股票), the biggest in US history. Ma, a former English teacher, has become the richest man on the Chinese mainland.

Born in Hangzhou, Zhejiang, Ma grew up as a happy kid. At the age of 12, he wanted to learn English. Every morning, he woke up at 5 am, cycled 40 minutes to a hotel near the West Lake where he could chat to foreign tourists. He did it for nine years, rain or shine.

In a 1995 trip to the US, Ma was showed the Internet for the first time. He searched Yahoo using the word “Beer”, and found that there was nothing in there about China. Seeing the chance, Ma returned to China and set up a website called China Pages without even knowing much about computers.

Four years later, 18 people including Ma, his wife and his friends founded Alibaba in Hangzhou. He believed in the Internet business potential (潛力) when few other Chinese did. Now, Alibaba has developed into the world’s largest e-commerce (電子商務(wù)) company, owning popular shopping websites like Taobao and Tmall. It makes more profit than Amazon and e-Bay combined.

What is a hurricane?

You may already know that hurricanes are storms that can cause devastating(毀滅性的)waves，wind，and rain．They happen during“Hurricane Season，”which is from June 1st until November 30th in the Atlantic Ocean and from May 15th until November 30th in the Pacific Ocean.

Categories (類別) of Hurricanes

There are five categories of hurricanes, which are based on wind speeds. The categories help people know how much damage(危害)a hurricane may cause because the greater the wind speed，the more dangerous the storm．For example，a Category 5 hurricane has winds over 155 miles per hour，which are strong enough to destroy the buildings along the shorelines completely．

Hurricane Dangers

When a hurricane happens together with heavy rainfall，there can be a devastating flood．The centre of a hurricane is called the eye．While most of a hurricane has dangerously strong winds，the eye is actually(事實上)a calm area in the storm．When the eye of a hurricane passes over land，people might think that it’s over，but before long the wind and rain increase again as the second part of the hurricane moves through．

Hurricane Safety Tips

There is no way to stop a hurricane or make it change direction，so if you ever find yourself in the path of a hurricane，be sure to remember the following safety tips．

·Be sure you have a radio，batteries，fresh drinking water，and enough food．

·Tell neighbors，friends，and family members your emergency plans．Tell them where you’ll go if you need to leave your home．

·If you live near the ocean，leave your home and travel to a safe place．You could stay with a friend or a family member，in a hotel／motel，or in an emergency shelter area．

·Stay inside during the storm．You could be seriously injured(受傷)if you go outside．
