If you visit the animal shelter(收容所)in Saunas, California, you'll see huge signs that have a picture of a dog and a cat on them. These signs are put in front of the shelter to catch people's attention. The signs make people interested in the shelter and encourage them to visit it and maybe even take a cat or a dog into their homes.
Each year, the Salinas shelter accepts thousands of dogs and cats. The animals are either lost ones or are left by people who can't take care of them. Of all the animals, some of them are taken into new homes. Some others are moved to other shelters. And, unluckily, some cannot be saved because they are too sick or are thought to be dangerous.
Animal shelters provide food, medicine, and safe places for animals. But they are not the best homes. The animals stay in small cage(籠子). The people who work at shelters do their best to care for the animals, but the animals do not always get the attention or exercise they need.
To prevent animals from becoming homeless, pet owners should take good care of their pets. Most pet doctors also suggest people make sure their pets have a special surgery(外科手術). It prevents animals from having more babies. And that reduces the number of homeless animals.
1.How many dogs and cats does the Saunas shelter accept every year?
2.Why are the shelters not the best homes for the animals according to the passage?
3.If you find a homeless cat in the street, will you take it home? Why or why not?

Soon computers and other machines will be able to remember you by looking at your eyes! The program works because everyone’s eyes are different. So in the future you won’t have to remember a number when you want to use a machine or take money out of a bank. You’ll just have to look at the machine and it will be able to tell who you are.
The eye-recognition (眼睛識別) program is already being tested in shops and banks in the USA, Britain, Spain, Italy and Turkey. Soon this technology will take the place of all other ways of finding out who people are.
However, scientists are working on other systems. Machines will soon be able to know you from the shape of your face or hand or even your smell! We already have machines that can tell who you are from your voice or from the mark made by your finger.
Eye-recognition is better than other kinds because your eyes don’t change as you get older, or get dirty like hands or fingers. And even twins have different eyes, so the program can be up to 94% correct, depending on how good the technology is. Some programs may only be 51%. In Britain, it was found that 91% of people who had tried it said that they liked the idea of eye-recognition.
In the future your computer will recognize you in the eye. So smile!
