It's time for school! But on May 14th, 170 students at Duncanville High School in Texas, US, were told to go back home.
Why? Because they were wearing the wrong clothes to school.
Schools in the US don’t always ask students to wear uniforms. But they have dress codes (著裝要求). For example, Duncanville High School tells students to wear belts, shirts without logos (標(biāo)識).
Schools’ most-hated (最討厭的) clothes are different.
In 2011, the saggy ( 松垮 的 ) trousers law was passed in Florida. It stops students from wearing trousers that show body parts.
Now, "the favorite new target ( 目 標(biāo) ) of the school dress code" is leggings( 緊 身 褲 ), reported the Associated Press. Some schools don't allow leggings. Other schools ask students to wear a shirt or a skirt over leggings.
Some students complain (抱怨) that schools are going too far(做得太過分) .
But schools say dress codes help protect students’ safety and make sure they grow up with good taste (有良好的鑒賞力).
"We want to teach them that they must meet the expectations (期望) not only here in school, but also outside school," said Andre Smith.

“The world has never been a better place to live in” says science writer Matt Ridley, “and it will keep on getting better.” Read on to see how Ridley makes his case. Right or wrong? You decide.
Compared with 50 years ago, when I was just four years old, people now make nearly three times as much money, eat one third more food and expect to live one third longer. In fact, it’s hard to find any areas of the world that’s worse off now than it was then, even though the world population has more than doubled over that period.
One reason we are richer, healthier, taller, cleverer, longer-lived and freer than ever before is that the four most basic human needs—food, clothing, fuel and shelter—have grown much cheaper. Take one example: In 1800, a candle providing one hour’s light cost six hours’ work. In the 1880s, the same light from a lamp took 15 minutes’ work to pay for. In 1950, it was eight seconds. Today, it’s half a second. In these terms, we are 43,200 times better off than in1800.
In the United States, rivers, lakes, seas and air are getting cleaner all the time. A car today produces less pollution traveling at full speed than a parked car did from leaks (泄漏) in 1970.
Although the world population is growing, the rate (率) of increase has been falling for 50 years. Across the world, national birth rates are lower now than in 1960, and in the less developed world, the birth rate has almost halved. According to a research report from the United Nations, population will start falling once it reaches 9.2 billion in 2075. After all, there are already seven billion people on earth, and they are eating better and better.
In 1970s, there were 550 billion barrels (桶) of oil reserves (儲存) in the world, and in the 20 years that followed the world used up 600 billion. So by 1990, reserves should have been overused by 50 billion barrels. Instead, it is reported there are 900 billion today. They will last for many years and people will find something in place of oil long before they run out.
The more we develop, the more we can develop. The more we invent, the more inventions become possible. For 200 years, pessimists (people who believe that terrible things will happen in future) have had all the headlines—even though optimists have far more often been right. There are some reasons for pessimists. No charity (慈善機構(gòu)) ever raised money by saying things are getting better. No journalist ever got the front page writing a story about how terrible things won’t happen. Don’t be a pessimist—dare to be an optimist!
1.Today, providing one hour’s light costs ______.
A. 6 hours’ work B. 15 minutes’ work
C. 8 seconds’ work D. 0.5 second’s work
2.Which of the following is true, according to the passage?
A. Things we used to need were much cheaper than they are today.
B. The pollution today is much more serious than it was long ago.
C. Population problem has nearly made the world stop developing.
D. It’s not necessary to be worried about oil reserves in the world.
3.What does the word “optimists” in the last paragraph mean?
A. People who are brave enough to face anything terrible.
B. People who can always tell good things from bad ones.
C. People who have hopeful and happy feelings about life.
D. People who don’t easily believe what they’re told about.
4. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?
A. Never Give Up B. Cheer Up
C. Don’t Be Sad D. Think Out

A serious problem for today’s society is who should be responsible(有責(zé)任的) for our elderly and how to improve their lives. It is not only a financial(財務(wù)的) problem but also a question of the systerm we want for our society. I would like to suggest several possible ways to this problem.
First, employers(雇主) should take the responsibility for their retired(退休的) employees. To make this possible, 1% of profits(利潤) should be left for this purpose. But when a company must take life-long responsibility for its employees, it may suffer from a commercial(商業(yè)的) disadvantage because of higher employee costs.
Another way of solving the problem is to return the responsibility to the individual(個人). This means each person must save during his working years to pay for his years of retirement. This does not seem a very fair model since some people find that it’s difficult for them to pay for their daily life without trying to earn extra to cover their retirement years. This means the government might have to step in to care for the poor.
In addition, the government could take responsibility for the care of elderly. The government could provide more money through government taxes to increase the level of pensions(養(yǎng)老金). What’s more, some institutions(社會福利機構(gòu)) should be created for senior citizens, which can help provide a comfortable life for them. Unluckily, as the present situation in our country shows, this is not a truly practical answer. The government doesn’t have enough money to care for the elderly, particularly when it is busy trying to care for the young.
One further solution is that the government or social organizations set up some working places especially for the elderly where they are independent.
In short, all these measures have advantages and disadvantages. Therefore, we are expecting to combine(結(jié)合) these measures so that we can provide the care we hope to give to our elderly generations.
Title | The elderly should be __1.__ more care of. |
Topic | Who should be __2._ to improve the lives of the elderly? |
__3.__ to the problem | ★__4.__ should give 1% of profits to their employees, but this may cause a commercial __5._. |
★Some individuals should save during his working years to pay for The years when he is retired, but the others have _6.__ paying for their daily life.
★More 7._could be provided through government taxes to increase the level of pensions. However, when the government is busy trying to look after the young, it can hardly _8._ to care for the elderly.
★Workplaces for the elderly should be __9._ by the government or social organizations.
Conclusion | We are expecting to combine(結(jié)合) these measures in __10.__ to provide the care for the elderly. |
