Why do we need to throw less away? There are two reasons. One is that some resources (資源) are nonrenewable (不可再生的) That means there is only a certain amount of that resource in the world . One example of this is oil. When we use up all the oil in the world, there will be no more.
There is another reason for throwing less away. All of our trash has to be put somewhere. Often , it is put into garbage dumps (垃圾場). Much of that trash will be there for hundreds of years. The dumps will be filled up with all this trash.
There are three ways to cut down on trash.
One way is to recycle. When you recycle something, it means it is made into another shape and used again. Old newspaper may become paper bags. A glass jar can be melted(熔化)and made into a bottle .
Another way to cut down on trash is to reuse things. You can wash and use again a bottle that can hold mustard (芥末醬)or something else .

Now satellites are helping to forecast the weather. They are in space, and they can reach any part of the world. The satellites take pictures of the atmosphere(大氣), because this is where the weather forms. They send these pictures to the weather stations. So meteorologists(氣象學家)can see the weather of any part of the world. From the pictures, the scientists can often say how the weather will change.
Today, nearly five hundred weather stations in sixty countries receive satellite pictures. When they receive new pictures, the meteorologists compare them with earlier ones. Perhaps they may find that the clouds have changed during the last few hours. This may mean that the weather on the ground may soon change, too. In their next weather forecast, the meteorologists can say this.
So the weather satellites are a great help to the meteorologists. Before satellites were invented, the scientists could forecast the weather for about 24 or 48 hours. When the traffic lights turn red, we will stop driving a car or crossing a street. Why is red used for traffic lights instead of other colors?

As we know, scattering (散射) happens when light goes through the air. For the same media(媒質), if the wavelength is long, the scattering will be short. If the wavelength is short, then the scattering will be long.

Of all lights we can see red has the longest wavelength, so the scattering is the weakest. That means the red light travels far. In fact, it travels farther on rainy days.

Using the red light can help drivers in farther areas sec the lights. It helps drivers stow down or stop in lime. If drivers don't see the red light until they are close, they may not be able to stop the car in time. An accident may happen Red can also excite people.
