【題目】

Monarch butterflies from eastern Canada make the most amazing journey in the insect world. Each year, this butterfly travels about 3 000 miles to its winter home in central Mexico(墨西哥). How can it fly so far? And why does it make this long and dangerous trip? Scientists still don't have an answer.

For many years, people in Mexico wondered where the orange and black butterflies came from every winter. Then, in 1937, a scientist started to follow and study the butterflies. For the next 20 years, he discovered that one butterfly started its journey in Canada. Four months later, it arrived in Mexico.

The length of the butterflies' trip is only one part of the mystery. Another amazing thing is that the butterflies always return to the same area in central Mexico.

How do the butterflies find their way back to the same place? This is an interesting question because only every fourth generation() makes the trip south. In other words, the butterfly that travels to Mexico this year is the great great grandchild of the butterfly that traveled there last year.

Each year, four generations of a Monarch butterfly family are born. Each generation of the family has a very different life. The first generation is born in the south in late April. It slowly moves north, reproduces(繁衍), and then dies. Each of these generations of butterflies lives for generations are born, reproduces, and die. Each of these generations of butterflies lives for only two or five weeks. In the autumn, the fourth generation of butterflies is born. This generation has a much longer life. It lives for about eight months. This generation of butterflies makes the amazing journey back to the winter there, and in the spring they reproduce and then die. Their offspring will be the first generation of the next circle of life.

Today, people are still studying the Monarch butterfly. But they are not clear about everything.

Rooftop Gardens

Have you ever seen a rooftop garden—

a garden on the top of a roof? Many people are

finding it good for the environment and good for

themselves.

Cities can be as much as 4—10 degrees

warmer than the countryside. Green rooftops

can actually help cool the air in cities. A single green roof will not do much to change the temperature of a city. However, when more buildings begin to change their rooftops into green spaces, it makes a real difference. Buildings that are cooler also use air conditioning less often. This reduces the amount of energy a building uses, which is good for the environment. Cities are usually more polluted than other areas. Plants on rooftops can even help clean the air. Gardens in the city can also provide a place for birds and bugs to live in.

One unusual rooftop garden is located above Children’s Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. The garden covers an area of 7, 500 square feet. The garden has flowers, fountains (噴泉),even a goldfish pond, and also paths that children can walk on in slippers or with bare feet. It is used as a place for the children and their parents to relax and be close to nature without leaving the hospital. Another interesting garden is on the rooftop of the Royal York Hotel in Toronto, Canada. A large vegetable garden has been planted on the roof. The hotel’s chefs (廚師)can pick fresh vegetables from the roof.

Now not all buildings have rooftop gardens. One reason is that rooftop gardens can be more expensive than traditional rooftops. However, they may save on heating and cooling bills in the future. Also, a roof needs to be flat and strong enough to support the weight of the garden.

Some people may not know about rooftop gardens and how good they can be for the environment. But word is starting to get out. You may want to keep your eyes on the skies when you walk in your town or city. You never know when you might find a secret garden many feet above the ground.

1What is a rooftop garden?

2What is the second paragraph mainly about?

3What is the rooftop garden in Children’s Hospital in St. Louis used as?

4Why is the rooftop garden of the Royal York Hotel interesting?

5Why don’t all buildings have rooftop gardens?

【題目】

Two children stood outside the door with old coats.

"Any old papers, lady?" asked one of them.

I was busy. I wanted to say no, but I saw that

their shoes had holes in them and that they were wet.

"Come in and I'll make you a cup of hot tea." They

came in, saying nothing. Their shoes left prints on the floor.

I gave them tea and bread to protect them from the cold outside. Then I went back to the kitchen and started my housework again.

The silence in the living room surprised me. I looked in.

The girl held the empty cup in her hands, looking at it. The boy asked me in a low voice, "lady, are you rich?"

Am I rich? Oh, no! I looked at the old things in my room.

The girl put her cup back in its saucer (茶碟)carefully and said, "Your cups match(相配)your saucers."

Then they left, holding their papers against the wind. They hadn't said thank you. They didn't need to. They had done more than that. They had reminded me that I had so much to thank for. The blue cups and saucers were simple, but they matched. The potatoes and meat before me, a roof over my head, my husband with a job-these things matched, too.

I moved the chairs back from the fire and cleaned the living room. The prints of their small shoes were still wet on my floor. I let them be. I wanted them there to remind me how rich I was.

1The writer let the two children in to .

A. serve them tea and food

B. sell them some old papers

C. show them how rich she was

D. offer them some warm clothes

2Why did the children think the writer was rich?

A. He liked the saucer.

B. The room was quite large.

C. The cups matched the saucers.

D. She was kind and ready to give.

3We can learn from the passage that .

A. the writer felt everything matched

B. the writer's husband was out of work

C. the children talked happily in the room

D. the children thanked a lot before leaving

4The underlined sentence "I let them be." means " ".

A. I loved them. B. I left them there.

C. I didn't like them. D. I didn't want to see them again.

5According to the passage, whether you are rich depends on .
