Almost all animals need to sleep to stay healthy. But sleeping can also be dangerous because other animals may hurt those who are sleeping. This leads to many different ways of sleeping that help them stay safe. Some of these ways may surprise you!
Almost all bats sleep upside down. They hang from a branch of a tree or the ceiling of a cave. Up high, bats are safe from most other animals. If they are in danger, they just fly away.
A dolphin sleeps with just half its brain at a time. It must stay awake to breathe and to watch for danger. Dolphin mothers and babies can go without sleep for as long as two months to stay safe.
Some ducks sleep with just half their brains, too. These ducks often sleep in a line. The ducks at both ends help to keep the group safe. They keep one eye open to watch for danger. The ducks in the middle sleep deeply with both eyes closed.
Seals breathe air, but that doesn't stop some of them from sleeping underwater. They hold their breath and dive deep to sleep for up to twenty minutes at a time. Sleeping deep underwater helps these seals stay safe from animals that hunt them near the surface.
Horses often sleep standing up. Their legs lock in place so they don't fall over. If a horse is lying down, it needs a long time to get up. A horse can run from danger more quickly if it is already standing.
A flamingo can sleep while standing on one leg. The standing leg locks so it stays straight. The other leg remains close to the flamingo's body. Its head rests on its back. A flamingo lives (and sleeps) near many other birds to stay safe.
Some seabirds can sleep while they fly. These large birds spend most of their lives over the ocean. They are in danger on the water, but they are safe in the air. They fly for many hours without flapping(拍打)their wings. Sometimes they sleep while they are flying.

【題目】 There is a famous English saying “You are what you eat”, and it means what you put in your mouth will become part of you. Many experts (專家) use it to tell people it’s important to have a good eating habit. For example, too much sweet food makes a person overweight. To avoid being fat, kids are told to keep off sweet food. However, a team of American scientists have discovered something new about eating sweet food.
“When we say some people are ‘sweet’, we mean they are kind and friendly to us. Perhaps this word can help us learn more about people’s feelings and acts.” said Brian Meier, a scientist from the study team. “Taste is something we experience every day. What we have done is to find whether we can know someone’s character and behavior depending on their taste.”
In one of their experiments, college students were asked questions about their character — whether, for example, they were soft-hearted or not. Then they were asked to make a list of their favorite food. According to their answers, the scientists found that the students who liked sweet food were nicer.
In their another experiment, the scientists found that people who preferred sweet food such as cookies and chocolate were more willing to help other people in need, and those who ate non-sweet food such as chips weren’t. For example, people with a sweet tooth were more likely to volunteer to clean up their city, visit sick children in the hospital and so on.
The result of the experiments is that people’s helpfulness or being nice has something to do with their taste for sweet food. So eating sweet food is a useful way to make people nice and helpful. Next time, try some ice-cream.
【1】The underlined word “it” refers to ________.
A.the sweet foodB.the eating habit
C.the American teamD.the English saying
【2】According to the result of the experiments, sweet food makes people ________.
A.overweightB.excitedC.relaxedD.friendly
【3】It can be learnt from the passage that ________.
A.scientists asked college students questions about their future
B.scientists told college students not to eat sweet food
C.people with a sweet tooth are more willing to help others
D.people’s character has nothing to do with their taste

【題目】 Matthew Youlden speaks nine languages fluently and understands more than a dozen more. When I told Matthew how I've been struggling to learn a second language, he had the following advice for me.
Talk to yourself. When you have no one else to speak to, there's nothing wrong with talking to yourself. It might sound really strange, but talking to yourself in a language is a great way to practice if you're not able to use it all the time. This can keep new words and phrases fresh in your mind and build up your confidence for the next time you speak with someone.
Have fun with it. Using your new language in any way is a creative (創(chuàng)造性的) act. Think of some fun ways to practise your new language: make a radio play with a friend, draw a comic strip, write a poem, or simply talk to whomever you can.
Listen. You must learn to listen before you can speak. Every language sounds strange the first time you hear it, but the more you expose (暴露) yourself to it, the more familiar it becomes, and the easier it is to speak it properly. We're able to pronounce anything, it's just we're not used to doing it. The best way is to hear every sound constantly and to imagine how every sound is supposed to be pronounced.
Watch people talk. Different languages make different demands on your tongue, lips and throat. Pronunciation is just as much physical as it is mental (腦力的). One way is to really look at someone while they're saying words that use that sound, and then to try to imitate (模仿) that sound as much as possible, though it might sound a bit strange. Believe me, it might be difficult at the beginning, but you will manage it. It's something that is quite easily done; you just need to practice it.
