When computer servers (服務(wù)器) operate a large program, they can get very hot. Cooling the servers can cost a lot. So some scientists want to know what would happen if the heat created by the servers could be used.

Data (數(shù)據(jù)) centres of large Internet companies such as Google and Microsoft have

thousands of computer servers. As these servers deal with information, they produce lots of heat, so they need huge cooling systems. These systems send the heat into the air.

A company in Holland (荷蘭) thinks paying for electricity to operate (使運(yùn)行) the servers

and then paying again to cool them are a waste of energy. So it developed a device (裝置) called the e-Radiator. It contains a computer server connected to the Internet. By placing these servers inside people’s homes instead of out-the-way data centres, the company hopes to heat homes from excess computer heat, while lowering costs for the computer users.

Five homeowners in Holland are testing the heating system in their homes. Jan Visser is one of them. He says the amount of heat produced by the e-Radiator depends on the work being done by the computer server. “It’s a great help for my family,” he says.

The company says e-Radiators produce heat temperatures of up to 55℃. It says the system

could save its users about $440 in heating costs a year.

Recently in a class in Tokyo, a robot teacher called Saya called out the names of students, and smiled at them. Her funny face made the students laugh. However, the inventor says she is not going to take the place of human teachers.

Unlike other robots without feelings, Saya has six feelings—surprise, fear, dislike, anger, happiness and sadness. She can also say simple phrases such as “Thank you” and “Sorry”.

“Robots that look like humans have an important influence on children and older people,”

Hiroshi Kobayashi, Saya’s developer, said.

Saya was first invented as a receptionist (接待員) robot in 2004. Later, she was tested in a real Tokyo classroom with many fifth and sixth grade students. “Although she still can’t do much more than call out names and shout orders like ‘Be quiet’, the children had great fun,” Kobayashi says. “They were very happy when Saya called out their names.”

Ronald C. Arkin, a scientist, says people should do more study on the interaction (互動(dòng))

between humans and robots before people depend on robots too much.

Kobayashi says, “Saya is just meant to help people, and we should not hold too much hope for her ability. She has no thought and no ability to learn. She is just a tool.”
